Have you ever wondered how trees react to mechanical stress? And why do some trees appear to have a different reaction to others? The way that trees lay down wood in response to mechanical stress varies by the type of tree. We all know the two different types of trees – broadleaf and conifers. In general terms (and there are always exceptions), broadleaf trees react to mechanical stress by “pulling” the area under stress up, a reaction referred to as the formation of tension wood. In human anatomy, a comparison might be the bicep. Conifers have the opposite reaction and tend to push the area under stress into a more upright position, a reaction referred to as the formation of compression wood. In simple terms, the reaction wood of broadleaf trees tends to be on the upper side of branches where it comes under tension, and the reaction wood of conifers tends to be on the underside of branches, coming under compression. Less obviously comparable in human terms, but more of a tricep than bicep. But what does this actually look like? We’ve created the video below where you can distinctly see the difference in branch formation through the creation of either tension wood or compression wood. (We’ve pointed this out to make it easier to see!) Contact us to find out how we can work together in 2025. Ever wondered what happens once planning consent has been obtained and trees on the development site have been marked for retention and protection? Nick recently undertook a site supervision visit in Warwickshire where new underground utilities were needed close to existing trees. The works were undertaken using a combination of an airspade and VacEx to displace and remove soil from around tree roots. This enabled the contractor to feed the new cables around the existing roots with minimal harm. Check out the video to see the start-to-finish process. With thanks to Doocey Group and University of Warwick. #trees #arboriculture #sitesupervision #ACoW #development #planningconsent #treeprotection #airspade #TreeCare #SiteSupervision #UrbanDevelopment #UtilityInstallation #RootProtection #Warwickshire #SustainableConstruction #AirSpade #VacEx #EnvironmentalAwareness 🌳🔧

As we welcome February, let's look back on the first month of 2025. The weather has dropped and we've seen a few frosty days - and frosty tree condition surveys. We were thrilled to hear of the approval for OxPens, the initiative will bring great opportunities for Oxford! We are also celebrating the approved extension request for Bloxham School’s Dewey Sports Centre. This will see major improvements, including floodlighting, 5 new netball/tennis courts and parking improvements. https://lnkd.in/emmSba6u Also, a final reminder that the Arboriculture Association Research Grants application closes TODAY. Late last year, we were asked to carry out a survey of trees ahead of planning applications at the Oxford High Preparatory School. During the tree survey we identified one tree which would have its root protection area impacted by the proposed works. Find out how our advice not only helped obtain planning consent for the second phase of development within the site but also limited the potential harm to the tree in question. https://lnkd.in/egUCebKM #arboriculture #TreeFrontiers #Oxfordshire #planning #rootstructure #trees #development #solution

Each year the Arboricultural Association offers a grant to support research into a relevant arboricultural topic. Over the last few years this has helped to advance projects from surveying bats in trees to biomechanics and the physical effects of tree climbing. Applications are invited for funding of up to £5,000 for projects based within the UK. The grant will be awarded at the discretion of the Arboricultural Association to support work considered appropriate. Find out more and Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eYRg7ZQ9
