  • The latest labour market data published this week from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows mixed results as UK wage growth continues to rise but job vacancies decline again, indicating an ongoing tight jobs market. ➡️ UK unemployment rate increased to 4.4%, the highest in nearly four years. ➡️ Employment rate down to 74.8%, with a slight quarterly decline. ➡️ Annual growth in average weekly earnings for both regular (excluding bonuses) and total earnings (including bonuses) was 5.6%, up from 5.2% in the three months to October. ➡️ Annual growth in real terms, adjusted for inflation, was 2.5% for regular pay and 2.4% for total pay. ➡️ Annual average regular earnings growth for the private sector was 6%. ➡️ Public sector pay growth was 4.1%. ➡️ Job vacancies fell for the 30th consecutive period, falling by 24,000 on the quarter to 812,000 in October to December. As with all the data we are presented with, the key questions for our clients are: What does this mean for our business? How will our employees perceive wage uplifts? And, how much can we afford in a sustainable fashion, while factoring in the rise in Real Living Wage (RLW), National Minimum Wage (NMW), and National Insurance costs? The answers vary dependent on sector. Care and hospitality have more to factor into their considerations than banking and finance. Our specialist team are here to help you manage the economic impact on your pay structure and share our expertise to support you in creating an equitable, sustainable and attractive reward offering. The provisional estimate for December 2024 was down another 47,000. There were 812,000 job vacancies in October to December 2024, down 24,000 on the previous three months, although still 16,000 above pre #COVID19 levels. • Pay growth picked up for a second consecutive period, again driven by strong increases in the private sector. Real pay growth, which excludes the effects of inflation, increased slightly.

Liz McKeown, Director of Economic Statistics, ONS
    • The number of employees on payroll, drawn from tax data, fell in the three months to November. Meanwhile, our household survey also reported a fall in the number of employees, with a rise in unemployment over the same period. However, we continue to advise caution when interpreting short-term movements from this survey where volatility remains a challenge, especially for more detailed breakdowns

Liz McKeown, Director of Economic Statistics, ONS
    • Alongside this, the number of vacancies fell again, for the thirtieth consecutive period, although the total number remains slightly above its pre pandemic level.

  • The latest labour market data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that UK wage growth has risen for the first time in more than a year, but signs point to an ongoing cooling off in the jobs market amid mounting uncertainty following recent Budget measures. ➡️ UK unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%. ➡️ Employment rate slightly up in the latest quarter to 74.9%. ➡️ Annual growth in average earnings for both regular (excluding bonuses) and total earnings (including bonuses) was 5.2%. ➡️ Annual growth in real terms, adjusted for inflation, was 2.2% for both regular and total pay. ➡️ Annual average regular earnings growth for the private sector was 5.4%. ➡️ Public sector pay growth was 4.3%. ➡️ Job vacancies fell for the 29th consecutive period by 31,000 to 818,000. It’s an interesting dataset from the ONS who advise caution in interpretation - and we think rightly so, as this seems to be lagging with the reality of our client base in terms of actual and intended pay reviews for the next quarter (January 2025). We are seeing concern around headcount, spiralling employment costs and faltering investment impacting award decisions, resulting in a 2% to 3% range - significantly lower than this data set reflects. The employment market has slowed: we are in a second consecutive month of negative growth, and we await the April 2025 tax increases with trepidation. Our specialist team are here to help you manage the economic impact on your pay structure and ensure you have a flexible and sustainable strategy and framework in place that is right for your business and your people. • 🚨 Confused about the difference between the Real Living Wage, National Living Wage, and National Minimum Wage? 🚨 ✅ Real Living Wage: Voluntary, based on the cost of living, and offering higher pay to benefit your employees and business. ✅ National Living Wage: Statutory for workers aged 21+, with an increase coming in April 2025. ✅ National Minimum Wage: Legal pay requirements for younger workers and apprentices, increasing in April 2025. We break it all down in our latest blog. Find out everything you need to know and why it’s crucial to stay compliant. 💡 Read in full here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e24VYGYQ #LivingWage #MinimumWage #HR #PayStructure #UKWages #Compliance #PayandReward
