The latest labour market data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that UK wage growth has risen for the first time in more than a year, but signs point to an ongoing cooling off in the jobs market amid mounting uncertainty following recent Budget measures. ➡️ UK unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%. ➡️ Employment rate slightly up in the latest quarter to 74.9%. ➡️ Annual growth in average earnings for both regular (excluding bonuses) and total earnings (including bonuses) was 5.2%. ➡️ Annual growth in real terms, adjusted for inflation, was 2.2% for both regular and total pay. ➡️ Annual average regular earnings growth for the private sector was 5.4%. ➡️ Public sector pay growth was 4.3%. ➡️ Job vacancies fell for the 29th consecutive period by 31,000 to 818,000. It’s an interesting dataset from the ONS who advise caution in interpretation - and we think rightly so, as this seems to be lagging with the reality of our client base in terms of actual and intended pay reviews for the next quarter (January 2025). We are seeing concern around headcount, spiralling employment costs and faltering investment impacting award decisions, resulting in a 2% to 3% range - significantly lower than this data set reflects. The employment market has slowed: we are in a second consecutive month of negative growth, and we await the April 2025 tax increases with trepidation.
