About us
The Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust (TWBPT) was established in 1979 to preserve the architectural heritage of Tyne and Wear through the repair, conservation and regeneration of our historic buildings and structures. Today, we work in close collaboration with communities, funders, volunteers and end users across all five Local Authority areas in the Tyne and Wear region to rescue, restore and safeguard buildings and structures under threat. Our work has evolved considerably in recent years and we work to achieve strong social and environmental aims through our core ethos of Heritage Better Managed.

Our first project to hit site at sunny Dunston Staiths. We're working with EDable Architecture , CK21 Ltd and Artis Consulting Ltd to provide a new home for Tyne and Wear Building Preservation Trust at Dunston Staiths. BCE NORTHERN LIMITED are our northern powerhouse delivering the project and we're delighted to get moving. The staiths birthed the keelmen who used to motor mighty loads of coal from here in the industrial boom and now are home to fascinating habitat in the rare salt marsh on the Gateshead Tyne. We're working with several collaborators at the moment to think about how we better work with these important ecologically industrial multi-species sites of post industry.

Last month, the team went to visit Keelmen's Hospital (some of us for the first time!) to have a look around the building and monitor current works like brick samples being taken for analysis, and the search for a well that appears on early plans for the courtyard area. Exciting times are ahead for this building, for both its past and its future. Head to our website and Patreon to find out more 🧱👷♀️

Can you tell where our Office Manager Corrina was recently? She headed over to Derry for the Heritage Development Trust Program gathering, hosted this time by the Inner City Trust! The event was a 2 day study tour, where Corrina got hands-on knowledge from experts in community and heritage-led regeneration in practice; took part in engaging workshops based on Derry's historic buildings, looked at fascinating case studies and, as you can see, went on a walk-and-talk tour of Derry Walls. Don't forget to check out our website (twbpt.org.uk) to find out more about our own projects and how you can support our team in breathing new life into old buildings for years to come 🧱🏛 #HeritageDevelopmentTrusts #HeritageRegeneration #TheArchitecturalHeritageFund #TheNationalLotteryHeritageFund

Restoration work is underway at St Mary's Heritage Centre! This Grade I listed former church originally dates back to the turn of the fourteenth century and is getting some much needed TLC, particularly focusing on the tower, south porch, and boundary walls. The project will cost a total of £300,000 and we're almost there but need your support to make it over the finish line. By becoming a member of the Trust, you can join our community in giving this old building a new lease of life and get exclusive behind the scenes updates and news about upcoming events. To find out more about how you can support us in saving this fascinating building, head to twbpt.org.uk/membership
