The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of inspiration as we participated in events and connected with individuals dedicated to closing the digital divide across Africa. From thought-provoking discussions to hands-on community impact, it’s been incredible to witness the power of collaboration and innovation. We celebrated the achievements of women driving change at the #InspiringFiftyAfrica Women in Tech Awards and engaged in transformative conversations at the #AfricaTechFestival in Cape Town. Moderating and chairing panels on connectivity and partnerships gave us the chance to explore solutions shaping the future of technology and digital inclusion. A highlight of our journey was visiting our incredible team and volunteers on the ground. Witnessing the impact of our work alongside Mary Munyoki, our Manager for Kenya and Malawi, was deeply inspiring. We’re especially proud of Victor mboya, whose outstanding efforts in connecting schools and communities are making a real difference. These experiences have reignited our passion and strengthened our resolve to advance meaningful connectivity across Africa. In Marabut, Samar, Philippines, connectivity is proving to be a lifeline. With satellite technology delivered through USAID and unconnected.org the municipality is no longer “un-connected.” Free WiFi now supports telehealth services at the Rural Health Unit, enhances disaster response, and will soon provide much-needed ATM access at the Municipal Hall. As Dr. Jeanette Gloria-Sabulao who is a Municipal Health Officer of Marabut, Samar, Philippines put it, “Connectivity tilts the balance between life or death.” This community network model demonstrates the transformative power of collaboration in solving critical local challenges. We’re excited to share that a minority community and a local governance facility in Maguindanao, Mindanao, Philippines now have free high-speed internet access, thanks to satellite technology! This milestone was made possible through unconnected.org’s collaborative efforts with ACCESS Mindanao, USAID - BEACON, and Ateneo de Davao University. This is indeed a significant step in addressing the digital divide in this longstanding conflict-affected area. As part of the socialized housing program ongoing in Rizal, Philippines, internet connectivity has become a key component in bridging the gap for the relocated informal settler families. In partnership with doublesquare networks, we at unconnected.org successfully implemented stable mobile coverage and internet facilities in the densely forested area of Morong. This connectivity implementation opens up learning opportunities not only for students but also for out-of-school youth, fostering growth and development within the community. This is indeed a huge step in our efforts to bridge the digital divide.
