About us

We unite the people and charitable organisations of Southwark through our grant making programmes and sheltered housing for older people in our almshouses. We invest in our communities through our annual £1m+ charity grants programmes and work collaboratively with organisations across Southwark and London at both strategic and grass root levels. The residents of our 75 almshouse homes enjoy superbly maintained buildings and facilities, and our staff give them one-to-one support to ensure they feel safe and comfortable, and live a fulfilling and independent life. Our place in Southwark is historic, yet our work today is focused entirely on helping meet present day social needs and problems specific to communities in Southwark: A need for strong and cohesive communities, a level playing field for all, and being positive about ageing. Our heritage properties in an around Borough Market are the final element of our work - caring for some of Southwark's best loved buildings, and ensuring they generate the retruns which enable our charitable mission.

Take a closer look at our Principal Award winner for Community Development in this year's British Association of Landscape Industries National Landscape Awards. The judges' comments: "The planting within this well-used and much-loved community space is establishing well. The contractor has very successfully implemented the designer's complex and intricate planting plan, including the craning in of large trees, to great effect, working with residents and other stakeholders to delivery a vibrant and life-enhancing urban oasis." 👏 United St Saviour's Charity #BALIAwards2024 Video Credit: Gary Britton Photography Ltd

🎨✨ Celebrating Creativity and Connection Across Generations ✨🎨 Last Friday, United St Saviour's Charity hosted the exhibition at Appleby Blue, for Everyone Lends A Hand, an inspiring intergenerational project led by artist Ed Gray. This initiative brought together Appleby Blue residents and Year 5 pupils from Boutcher Church of England Primary School a truly heartwarming exchange of creativity. Over several weeks, students visited Appleby Blue to immerse themselves in the lives of our residents, capturing the essence of our community through art. On other days, residents joined the children at school, fostering meaningful relationships and sharing new perspectives. The exhibition wasn’t just a celebration of this collaboration—it also highlighted our ongoing intergenerational initiatives Songs and Smiles playgroup by The Together Project and our cookery school activity ‘Man with a Pan. These programs, along with the project, exemplify the power of bringing generations together to learn, create, and connect. The end-of-year celebration was a moment to remember. The Boutcher Primary School choir filled the room with festive spirit through Christmas carols, and students reflected on their experiences. The project’s title, Everyone Lends A Hand, came from Appleby chef Hulya Erdal, who beautifully described it as a Turkish phrase about coming together to create something special. Her own cookery classes not only inspired artwork but embodied the collaborative spirit: “Everyone has a part to play in this project that shows what it means to be part of a community.” Let’s continue to create spaces where every generation can lend a hand. 🌟 #IntergenerationalConnection #ArtInCommunity #ApplebyBlue

  • This week, the Government published the final report of the Older People's Housing Taskforce, Our Future Homes: Housing that Promotes Wellbeing and Community for an Ageing Population. We are proud to see this important report released, having submitted to the consultation and through our collaboration with the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) to host Serious Games workshops in Southwark, which is referenced in the report. It underscores the critical role housing plays in enabling older people to live well, independently, and as part of thriving communities. The report’s nine core recommendations, alongside an overarching call for collective leadership, reflect a bold and necessary vision for change. At United St Saviour’s Charity, we are already putting these principles into practice where possible. Projects like Appleby Blue demonstrate how age-friendly, community-centered housing can promote wellbeing, foster intergenerational connections, and enhance quality of life. Key recommendations: 💡 Designing housing for later life: Through Appleby Blue, we’ve shown how thoughtful design can integrate accessibility, dementia-inclusive features, and community spaces to support independence and connection. 📝 Strengthening planning policies: The report highlights planning barriers—an issue we’ve faced firsthand in delivering Appleby Blue. Clearer, more supportive frameworks are vital to scaling these housing models. 🪴 Creating age-friendly communities: Housing is about more than buildings. Appleby Blue incorporates a community hub, supporting the wellbeing of both residents and neighbors. 🏘️ Expanding affordable options: We strongly support the Taskforce’s call to make innovative housing financially accessible, particularly for older people on low to middle incomes. 🤝 Fostering collective leadership: Appleby Blue exemplifies the power of collaboration between the public, private, and voluntary sectors. This partnership model is essential to breaking down silos between housing, health, and social care and ensuring older people in the UK can live healthy, independent lives. We’d like to thank Julienne Elizabeth Meyer CBE and the Taskforce members for their leadership on this critical issue. The report is a rallying call for everyone in housing, care, and wellbeing to work together to turn these recommendations into reality. At United St Saviour’s Charity, we remain committed to partnering across sectors to expand affordable, age-friendly housing and to share the insights from Appleby Blue as a blueprint for what’s possible. • 🥗 The Power of Food! That’s a wrap on our Autumn Lecture Series! Last week, we hosted the final event, a thought-provoking exploration of The Power of Food. 🍽️ Here are some of the key insights from the event: 🌍 Breaking Down Barriers Jess Thompson discussed how food is a universal experience that can bring people together across cultures, generations, and backgrounds. From teaching cooking skills to breaking bread, shared meals create a "magic way of bringing people together" and remind us of our shared humanity. 💡 Co-Design is Critical Dr Sophia Amenyah who leads the Bournemouth University LEMONADE research project at Appleby Blue. emphasised the importance of engaging communities in the design and delivery of food initiatives. Whether it’s residents deciding how to cook together, children shaping school menus, or migrants leading cookery classes, co-production fosters ownership, builds confidence, and ensures initiatives meet real needs. 🍅 Simple Food, Big Impact Anna Taylor of The Food Foundation highlighted the power of simple, affordable ingredients like vegetables, pulses, and beans to improve diets, sustainability, and long-term health. Cooking together—chopping, stirring, and sharing stories—was also shown to have significant physical and mental health benefits, particularly for older adults. 🛠️ Overcoming Barriers to Cooking Our chair, Claire Pritchard highlighted the challenges many face in cooking, from time pressures and lack of equipment to limited access to fresh ingredients.how community kitchens and cooking sessions are invaluable in breaking down these barriers, teaching practical skills like chopping garlic or grilling, and fostering social bonds. 👩🍳 A Catalyst for Change Organisations like Migrateful, which empowers migrants to share their culinary traditions, show how food can combat prejudice, create employment opportunities, and encourage pride in cultural heritage. 💬 Food as Connection Beyond the practical, food is deeply emotional. When we’re happy, we celebrate with food; when we’re sad, we turn to it for comfort. This emotional resonance was beautifully captured during discussions about how food has become integral to the social fabric of communities. 🍝 A Shared Meal The event closed with a meal prepared in the Appleby Blue Community Kitchen by our wonderful residents led by Hulya Erdal—a delicious veggie pasta bake, salad, and tiramisu. It was a moment to reflect on how something as simple as cooking and eating together can build stronger communities. As our speakers noted, creating inclusive communities through food is possible when we come together, overcome barriers, and embrace shared experiences. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this inspiring event! Let's continue using food as a force for good, bringing people together and building a better future. 📸 Benoît Grogan-Avignon #ApplebyBlue #ThePowerOfFood #CommunityEngagement #SocialCohesion #HealthyLiving
