The Institute for Safe Autonomy (ISA) at the University of York takes a safety critical approach to the design, development and testing of robotics and connected autonomous systems. Our aim is to minimise the risks associated with these technologies, while exploring their potential to deliver impactful solutions for the benefit of society, the economy and the planet. ISA’s purpose-built facility provides collaborative work and test spaces for more than 100 researchers across a variety of disciplines, including Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Law, Management and Philosophy. ISA’s sector-agnostic safety experts work in partnership with academia, industry, government and civil society to research safe, ethical, real-world applications for autonomous systems. ISA is a ‘Living Lab’ which combines a range of experimental laboratories in robotics, advanced communications and quantum technologies, providing research and development spaces for autonomous systems operating on the ground, underwater and in the air.

I am writing with some slightly sad news as I will be stepping down as the Institute’s Senior Business Development Manager from Wednesday, 20 November. I am leaving under the terms of the University's Voluntary Severance scheme but want to assure you that the Institute will continue to engage, support and assist industry to fully exploit and realise the benefits of safe robotic and connected autonomous systems. The University is currently putting in place new arrangements to cover the Institute’s business development and industry engagement requirements but I will continue to act as your point of contact up until my departure and will also keep you informed of developments as they take place. A fascinating insight today into the possibilities of robotics innovation at the Institute for Safe Autonomy. I think I’ve made some new friends as well.
A 3D model of ISA's own dedicated solar farm, designed as a "living lab" to test the feasibility and safety of operating robots and drones to monitor and maintain such facilities (often in much more hostile environments than the serene setting of the University of York campus!). Oh, and the electricity generated by the farm will contribute to the Institute being energy self-sufficient by 2025. To learn more contact Olufemi Olayiwola.
Here is a first preview of our new solar farm at the Institute for Safe Autonomy. we have implemented a 3D model to aid the training of autonomous platforms. This model will remain useful throughout the lifetime of the installation. If you are willing to have such a model, I would be happy to share/collaborate.

It was an interesting session last week at the REEE2024 conference in Nantes, France, where I presented part of our ongoing work on "Challenges to UAV inspection in Solar Photovoltaics". I was also privileged to be a session chair, where Gabriel Costa (inset) won the best paper award. Thanks to Yassine AMIRAT for hosting the conference at the ISEN YNCREA OUEST in Nantes and all the wonderful colleagues.

Working with Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) for the past few months on the design of a potential challenge in Robotic Dexterity has been fascinating: I've had the opportunity to speak to many brilliant roboticists about how to unlock advanced dexterous capabilities. We want to develop a prize that will change the conversation globally about robotic capabilities. And we need feedback to make sure we scope something that truly pushes the boundaries of what is possible, brings in radical thinkers and inspires ambitious work. Today we’re publishing our initial draft - or prototype - for how we think the challenge could be structured and focused.
