Great discussion at the 74th Koningswinter conference this week, which brings together Germany and the UK to discuss and collaborate on the big issues facing us today. Our CEO Jorge Pikunic spoke on the energy and climate panel and shared his view on how we accelerate progress to net zero in a way that is affordable for families and businesses. His key points were: 1️⃣ A successful energy transition must meet three tests: deliverability, affordability, and security of supply. 2️⃣ We need to continue to accelerate the deployment of renewables but another critical challenge we need to tackle is flexibility. How do we ensure we have reliable power that can be ramped up and down to address the intermittency of renewable energy? 3️⃣ One easy win to meet the three tests is to use, reuse and adapt the infrastructure and assets we already have today - such as our existing power plants #energytransition

📢 CCSA statement on next projects The CCSA has welcomed the UK Government’s funding commitment for the country’s first carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects – HyNet and the East Coast Cluster in Track-1. However, it is of vital importance that momentum is maintained on CCUS projects. If we are to meet the UK's carbon reduction goals and maintain investor confidence, there cannot be a pause between the current projects and those that follow. To achieve the targets set out in the UK’s 5th and 6th Carbon Budgets, 20-30 million tonnes (Mt) of CO₂ must be captured and stored annually by 2030, rising to 50-60 Mt by 2035. The CCSA urges the Government to publish the next stages of project selection for Track-2 as well as Track-1 expansion as soon as possible in order to maintain investor confidence in the UK as a global leader in this technology and enable these projects to progress. 🛠 To fully unlock the potential of CCUS, the Government must enable projects to move forward at pace. The CCSA will continue our engagement with the Government on delivering the whole Cluster Sequencing Programme. #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero

📢 The CCSA is thrilled to hear Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband MP, highlighting the critical role of CCUS and the UK Government’s commitment of £21.7bn over 25 years to CCUS clusters in the North East of England (the East Coast Cluster), and North West of England and North Wales (HyNet). Miliband remarked, “Last week marked the start of a new era, as Government and industry agreed the deals that will launch Britain’s carbon capture industry. This investment will create 4,000 jobs in our industrial heartlands, remove over 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, and establish the UK as a leader in carbon capture technology.” Importantly, he also emphasised, "We will have more to say in the coming months about carbon capture sites in Humberside, Scotland, and elsewhere around the country,” affirming the Government's continued commitment to CCUS and sustaining the momentum on the next CCUS projects. 🛠 The CCUS sector holds huge potential for economic prosperity across the UK by creating 70,000 new skilled jobs and protecting 77,000 jobs in critical industries. Industry will continue collaborating with the Government and other partners to secure financial close on these projects and commence construction swiftly to ensure the UK meets its net zero targets. #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero

📢 VPI welcomes the government's announcement today to support a handful of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects from Track 1. This is a crucial step towards making #CCS a reality in the UK and a significant milestone in the energy transition. However, this is only the beginning. To reach the necessary levels of captured carbon to achieve net zero, we must maintain momentum. VPI's carbon capture project in Immingham is one of the first proposed emitter projects for the Viking CCS cluster which has Track 2 status. It is technically ready and has appointed its EPC contractor Worley - one of the last stages before construction begins. If selected by the government soon, we could be capturing our carbon emissions by 2029. Moreover, our project would provide scale, accounting for 17% of the government's carbon capture targets for 2030. It would also positively add to Rt Hon Rachel Reeves growth agenda, creating 1500 jobs during construction and hundreds more from services like consulting and project management. We look forward to hearing more about Track 2 soon. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eYRc3hGy

🎯 As the UK’s largest emitting cluster, the Humber region offers one of the largest opportunities for industrial decarbonisation, which will be critical if we are to achieve our net zero 2050 target. 💡 The next generation has an important role to play in this journey, so we’ve joined forces with local businesses and students from Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire to create this short film and shine a light on the industry’s commitment to a sustainable future and inspire local children to find out more about potential careers. 📢 Our supplement with the New Statesman on Energy Security is out this week. You can hear from the Energy Minister Michael Shanks, our CEO Jorge Pikunic on why there is no silver bullet to solving energy security as we transition to net zero, and from the CEO of Energy UK, Emma Pinchbeck. You can also learn more about our Humber Zero project, which includes the first proposed emitter projects for Viking CCS, one of the Track 2 carbon capture clusters selected by the government. VPI's project is technically ready, meaning we have the potential to create jobs and kickstart the decarbonisation of the Humber within this parliament, if we keep up the momentum on CCS. 📢 This week VPI appointed Worley as its EPC contractor for its Humber Zero project. VPI has been working with Worley, a global professional services company of energy, chemicals and resources experts, on the front-end engineering design (FEED) for the carbon capture retrofit since 2022. We have now awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) development phase to Worley, pending a final investment decision next year. Located in the heart of the Humber region, our Immingham plant is one of the two proposed emitter projects for the Viking CCS cluster, which has been given Track 2 status. We aim to capture up to 3.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. We estimate that the project will create more than 1500 construction jobs, alongside additional permanent jobs once operational. This will help to decarbonise and futureproof the industrial area as we move to net zero.

In the first quarter of the year, renewables provided a record high share of 51% of electricity generation in the UK. In September, we will see coal phased out entirely. This is good news, because it means the energy transition is well underway. It also means that to bridge the gap between the now and the next, power infrastructure needs to adapt. Take our Damhead Creek plant. Ten years ago, it used to start around 30 times in a year. Fast forward to 2023 and it started 167 times. This is because as more renewables come onto the energy system, it needs to come on and off in line with the weather, to ensure we have the power we need to go about our daily lives. This stop/start nature takes its toll on the plants, so we find opportunities to adapt them and develop new ways of operating them. That is why we have embarked on an ambitious multi-year investment programme in Damhead Creek to improve its efficiency and flexibility, and to extend its life. As part of that investment, we are undertaking a 50-day outage to replace a 90 ton, 12 metre long rotor. I went to visit recently, and as you can see from the images, the work is significant, with up to 200 people on site. And I was proud to see the huge focus on doing this work safely. It brings to life how at VPI we believe that achieving net zero is fundamental to all of our futures and getting there means embracing a new energy reality – balancing vision with practical action to find solutions that work. Congratulations to our team and partners for the work accomplished to date! 👍 #energytransition
