About us

Waymap provides the world’s only navigation app that guides you both indoors and outdoors. Our app is accurate up to 1m (and 10 degrees heading), with no external signals required. With our app on your phone, you can explore the city, catch your bus, or go right to the aisle you want at the store. Waymap is a high-technology business that was founded to address the navigation needs of visually impaired persons. Since then, however, we have expanded our vision to provide the world's most accurate and inclusive navigation app, driven by cutting-edge technology. Installed across a city’s transport network, streets and major buildings, our app gives step-by-step guidance as soon as you step out your door. It works anywhere we have a map.

Happy New Year, all! Our Founder Tom Pey has started a Substack, where he will be sharing his thoughts, research and musings on Technology and The Future of Accessibility. He is kicking off the new blog with a New Year's Resolution, arguing for a greater culture of care. 🌟 "I don’t know about you but, at this time of the year, I like to sit in my comfy chair of retrospection and reflect on what I and we, as a community of disabled people, have achieved over the past year or so. I think about my fellow disabled travelers and my back stiffens at the thought of how much more we need to do so that equal opportunity becomes more than a mere mantra that is recited at us by those parts of society that remain change resistant [...]" You can read his first blog post in full here: https://lnkd.in/ex35Kbfb

Our founder, Tom Pey , spoke to journalist Robert Booth at The Guardian about the widening opportunity gap between young disabled people and their peers, due to the lack of inclusive design in new AI products. [Pey said], '"difficulties for blind children were “now compounded because they’re excluded [and] distanced from their non-disabled peers, because those people can experience games, alternative realities and the AI-driven visual types of technology”. “If we look at the hardware around AI, a lot of it is visual, and it ignores the needs of blind people, and it ignores people who have difficulty, not just with not being able to see, but being able to interpret visual imagery,” he said. “Those people, like me and others, we’re just excluded.”' A very interesting read. 'I never say that I lose my way. If anything, I am finding an alternative route'. 💛 This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are reflecting on some of the fantastic people we are lucky to meet through our work, who help us to increase our understanding, build public awareness, and drive innovative solutions for persons with disabilities. Here at Waymap, the principle of 'Nothing About Us Without Us' has long been at the core at what we do: that being, no decision should be made without the full and direct participation of members of the group(s) affected. We would love to draw your attention to one remarkable lady, Evelyn Valdez, who we met over in Washington DC. An avid traveller and adventure seeker, with a love of fashion and latin music, Evelyn epitomises the adventurous spirit. We were lucky to film a short documentary film, following Evelyn around DC, which she moved to after losing her vision at seventeen.
