"We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." – Chief Seattle's Speech, 1854. Deep in the Scottish Highlands, Ceannacroc Estate stands out as as a testament to nature's resilience. Over the years, the Girvan family has planted over a million trees and seen the benefits for the animals and generations to come. This year, in partnership with Zulu Ecosystems, Scottish Forestry, and the Woodland Carbon Code, Ceannacroc has also become home to the first ancient woodland restoration programme of its kind to qualify for carbon credits. This recognition of the value of ancient woodlands under the code is set to pave the way for many more projects made financially viable. Peatland restoration has become a key focus area for Zulu Ecosystems as peatlands play a massively important role in our terrestrial ecosystem dynamics – in Scotland and beyond. Restoring them blends science, landscape design and craftsmanship. While some land restoration projects may take years to achieve measurable outcomes, restoring peatlands rapidly unlocks benefits, such as increases in functional habitat, benefits for wildlife, improvements in water regulation and quality, as well as locking in carbon that would otherwise be lost. 🖼️ On the left: Pre-restoration An eroding peatland gully, where concentrated water flow is eating away at peat banks. Without intervention, the process cannot self-correct, leading to continued degradation and carbon loss. 🖼️ On the right: Post-restoration The gully transformed: re-profiled and re-turfed banks. Water flow has been managed using baffles, dams, and armoured channels to slow erosion, raise water tables, and stabilise the landscape, laying the groundwork for recovery. At Zulu Ecosystems, our goal is to create outcomes that respect natural processes, allowing nature to continue and consolidate the work. To achieve this, we work with skilled contractors, consultants, and specialists so that we can deliver results that are both impactful and immediate. Penrith today with Alex Robinson, Emily Norton and Craig Patrick for the AHDB - Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board roadshow focused on “Natural capital : Leveraging environmental assets”. Emily introduced Natural Capital as a concept, how corporates are getting involved through TCFD, and how farmers can be paid for providing these services to society and build resilience. Alex discussed how Woodland creation and Peatland restoration, aligned to recognised codes, are ways in which farmers can deliver both financial and environmental benefits, and a practical example of how he has made it work on his farm with Zulu Ecosystems. Edward Asseily and Claire Burke Presenting how to aggregate supply and demand for nature’s services from Zulu Ecosystems joint work with Severn Trent and funded by Innovate UK Showing early examples of how flood models can be used to provide an understanding of how woodland planting can mitigate flood impacts. Connecting investors with the ecosystems services produced, we’re keen to speak to as many relevant stakeholders who are interested in becoming involved in developing this market. #naturefinance24 Ecosystems Knowledge Network NatureFinance

Delighted to announce our partnership with Environmental Farmers Group (EFG) 🌳 EFG and Zulu Ecosystems are joining forces to help farmers identify opportunities to turn marginal land into new woodlands and participate in the woodland carbon market. The landmark initiative, backed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs's Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF), aims to transform woodland creation efforts across 600,00 hectares in the south of England as part of EFG's Catchment Conservation Plan. The partnership includes: ↳ Taking a farmer-led approach to meet the UK's net zero ambitions ↳ Conducting thorough woodland landscape assessments and working with farmers to identify areas that are most environmentally impactful and most marginal for agriculture ↳ Enhancing native woodland habitats, sequestering carbon, and providing social and environmental benefits while adding long-term value to farms through woodland carbon credits 📢 "By helping farmers to work together in shaping a compelling plan for the landscape, we can deliver large scale nature projects that combine environmental impact, financial viability, and community support," said Edward Asseily, CEO of Zulu Ecosystems. “Woodlands are one piece in the landscape mosaic jigsaw. By working with Zulu Ecosystems, we hope to build the business case for smaller woodlands, connected as part of our wider Catchment Conservation Plans to meet our net zero ambitions,” says Digby Sowerby, Operations Officer at Natural Capital Advisory who support EFG. This project is the first of its kind for Zulu Ecosystems and EFG members, establishing a model that could be replicated in other areas across the UK. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eUWqqrdg
