🏆 As the eldest daughter in her family, Akshaya Thanasegaran grew up with plenty of responsibilities. With an eye on her future prospects, and inspired by her cousin, she decided to complete an accountancy qualification, so she enrolled on the Diploma of Accountancy at IPK College Penang, Malaysia. Despite grappling with self-doubt during her studies, Akshaya has taken on leadership roles in several subjects and has proactively assisted peers. She has now been named CMI’s International Student of the Year 2024. Her tutors said: “Akshaya’s active participation in class discussions and willingness to assist peers in assignments and in clarifying doubts exemplify her leadership. She consistently treats everyone with equality and respect, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment that aligns with CMI’s principles of inclusivity and integrity.” Among her extracurricular achievements, she was Vice President of IPK’s Culture Club; led her team to victory in an entrepreneurship competition; won the Internal Accounting Ignition Competition; and came second in the Battle of Accounting Championship. She also organised and participated in an industry seminar that featured three major speakers from the accounting field. The CMI Awards of Excellence judges were impressed with Akshaya’s dedication and commitment to ongoing learning and development. ⭐ https://bit.ly/3V98DKU #CMIAwards

🏆CMI’s International HE Partner of the Year 2024: Sunway University 🏆 Sunway University, CMI’s International HE Partner of the Year 2024, is one of Malaysia’s leading private universities. It holds a five-star rating from the Malaysian government and has been awarded Premier Digital Technology University status – one of only 11 institutions in the country to carry that honour. Based in the west of Kuala Lumpur, Sunway is on a “transformative journey” to nurture competent and ethical leaders who can drive positive change in today’s dynamic business landscape. And its partnership with CMI is the foundation: around 820 students have been awarded Level 5 qualifications. The school, whose faculty members are Chartered Managers themselves, has a remarkable 100% employability index, which it says shows the value placed on CMI certifications by employers. All management students graduate with Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status, setting them apart as professionals with recognised leadership competencies and helping them to thrive in a competitive business environment. The CMI Awards of Excellence judges were impressed with how Sunway continues to improve its contribution to better management and leadership practices in companies, both across Malaysia and internationally. The Sunway team described being shortlisted for the award as “a moment of immense pride”. ⭐ https://bit.ly/4i4FhHF #CMIAwards

Insights from the CMI Communities Event at Putra Business School, Malaysia. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the CMI Communities event at Putra Business School, Malaysia. The event was truly engaging, offering a fantastic platform to connect with like-minded professionals and exchange ideas. As with most CMI events, the day was packed with valuable insights and meaningful takeaways. I had the opportunity to reconnect with some incredible leaders and also forge new connections with inspiring individuals. Here are my key takeaways from the event: ■Challenges Facing Accidental Managers – Addressing the gaps and empowering individuals who find themselves in leadership roles without prior training. ■ROI from Leadership Training – Highlighting the tangible benefits and long-term value of investing in effective leadership development. ■The Vital Role of Chartered Managers – Understanding why earning the Chartered Manager designation is crucial for driving organizational and personal growth. I’m looking forward to participating in more enriching events like this in the future. Stay tuned—exciting things are on the horizon! As well as a wonderful CMI event, my time in Malaysia has been extremely productive: 👍 On Wednesday we met with Prof. Dato Dr Mohammad Shatar Bin Sabran, Mohamad Dzafir Mustafa and Azliana Binti Ahmad of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). It was a fruitful conversation on how we can further our collaboration! 👍 On Thursday, I was honoured to meet the Acting High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency David Wallace. We spoke about CMI and the British High Commission continuing to work closely to promote British Chartered Professional Bodies. 👍 Later that day I joined one of CMI’s wonderful partners focused on executive education, Asia e University, for a Tea Talk session on leadership in sustainability and digital transformation. So much interest in the topic, and in Chartered Manager status. Thank you Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha Raja Abdullah and Prof Dr Noor Raihan Ab Hamid for your hospitality, and for everyone who came and engaged! 👍 Throughout the trip, I had the opportunity to speak to a number of media outlets on a range of topics, from management skills to AI to leading in an uncertain world. Many thanks for speaking to me: Bernama TV 🇲🇾, Astro AWANI, Star Media Group Berhad, and Utusan Malaysia. 🙌 A huge thank you to Professor Emeritus Dr. M Mustafa Ishak CMgr CCMI and Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai CMgr CCMI for your work in securing these media opportunities to raise awareness of CMI’s mission in Malaysia! I’ll shortly be leaving Malaysia for the second stop in my trip, Sri Lanka! #BetterManagers

Honored to have received my official Chartered Manager certificate in person from the Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Ann Francke OBE alongside the Chair of the Regional CMI Board, Professor Emeritus Dr. M Mustafa Ishak at the CMI Communities Live event held in Putra Business School, UPM, Malaysia, last week. The event was packed with inspiring discussions, but one takeaway on AI, particularly ChatGPT, truly resonated with me as a marketing professional. There’s a common assumption that AI could replace roles like Marketing Executives, possibly due to misconceptions that we only handle copywriting or graphic design. However, the scope of a marketer’s role is far more comprehensive. Marketing involves strategic planning, client and stakeholder coordination, on-the-ground execution at events, and managing complex projects that require human insight, adaptability, and interpersonal skills. These physical coordination tasks, from organizing the quarterly Town Hall meetings in my current company, exhibitions, to executing high-stakes campaigns, simply cannot be replaced by AI. Tools like ChatGPT can certainly support us, but they complement rather than replace the nuanced, hands-on work of a dedicated marketing professional. Reflecting on this, I feel even more driven to champion purposeful, human-centered marketing that balances technology with the irreplaceable value of personal connection and experience. I appreciate the meaningful connections and the learning insights from the distinguished panellists, speakers, moderators and members throughout this event: Francine Torbett, Dr. Christina SS Ooi, FCMI, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amjad Shamim, PhD, CMgr FCMI, CPM, Megat Fazrul Azlin Megat Abd Aziz, Danial Rahman, Millie Yong, Patrick Klotz, Monique Yong, Dr. Guna Seelan R., Jamil Karkach, LL.B (Hons), ACILEx, MCMI, fCMgr Thank you to Chartered Management Institute for this recognition and to everyone who has supported me along this journey. Here’s to continuous learning, growth, and impactful leadership! #CMI #CharteredManager #Leadership #ProfessionalDevelopment #CMICommunitiesLive #AIinMarketing #GrowthMindset #PurposefulLeadership
