Connect: Health Tech reposted this
Fantastic to see Paula Rogers-Brown – Head of Communities & Ecosystem Engagement at Connect: Health Tech – on this panel 👏 “Building a diverse and equitable work environment does not require complicated policies that are difficult to implement, maintain and measure" said Paula. "It really is simple: things like being really clear on the actual skills, qualifications and experience needed for a role, offering hybrid working to expand your pool of applicants, or holding events at different locations/times of the day so they are accessible by a wider group of attendees. All of these factors are easy to implement and effective ways to create more inclusive and collaborative working environments. Leaders can play a key part here by being intentional about implementing the principles of DEI. It creates a win/win scenario – for staff and the organisation as a whole.” Do you have questions for Paula? You can find her on Connect: Health Tech: https://lnkd.in/gu-gXfjB
We are delighted to share this from our YAC members and students, Jesimiel Akinsuyi and Ayoife Dada, who attended a panel discussion last week entitled 'The DEI Backlash: Moving Forward on Racial Equity at Work', in collaboration with Homerton College #Changemakers, University of Cambridge and Black Talent & Leadership in STEM, as part of the celebration for the Black History Month 2024👇🏽 They both said how amazing it was to have the opportunity to have a voice on a panel with such important and respected individuals which included: Lord Simon Woolley, Principal, Homerton College, Olu Orugboh, CEO & Co-founder Black Talent & Leadership in STEM and Chair of Cambridge Wireless Ltd, Paula Rogers-Brown Milner Therapeutics Institute, Yemi Jackson MBA, ACMA, Founder & CEO, Engage Transform, Pedro Gil ARB RIBA, Founder & Director, Studio Gil and Ed Kirby, Senior Manager, Talent, Experience, Engagement Arm. Jesimiel said: “As someone currently navigating the job market, it was interesting and also a relief to hear how some companies approach and understand the power of having a diverse workforce, whilst there is still a long way to go for many companies. Multiple panel members raised the point that job descriptions add an additional barrier to attracting a diverse group of people to particular roles. During my opportunities to speak, I also emphasised the fact that increasing diversity, tackling microaggressions, and including people from a wide range of racial, socio-economic, and neurodiverse backgrounds will not be a comfortable process. We are attempting to rewire and shake the deep-rooted institutional biases that currently make attracting and retaining diverse talent a massive issue. This requires making people uncomfortable, but necessary growth and change can never be found in a comfort zone.” Ayoife added: “Having read and listened to various sources, including perspectives from young individuals at my university, I felt it was important to define what DEI means when giving my opening remarks. It was insightful to hear from senior recruiters and other professionals whose work includes implementing DEI programs and initiatives and discussing their approach to hiring and retaining underrepresented employees.” Thank you, Jesi and Ayoife, for representing the YAC and for contributing your thoughts to such an essential discussion 🙏🏽 >> For more about the Black Talent and Leadership in STEM movement, where you can sign up as an individual learner or as an organisation, go to: https://lnkd.in/edP2_Nd4 --- Black Talent & Leadership in STEM is a cross-industry partnership with Cambridge Wireless Ltd, Homerton College, The 10,000 Interns Foundation, Synergy Organisational Solutions. How can clinical need inspire innovation? For Louise Allen it was early detection of visual problems in children. Louise has explored how to improve screening in children, through a physical device and a web-app. “As clinicians we are aware of the clinical need, and we are in one of the best positions to try and meet that demand.” Amit Agrawal had a similar experience at being face-to-face with the problem in surgery, and that often the problem is a lack of time to think about how it could be solved more effectively. Amit is working on an innovation to help in breast surgery, creating a more effective solution for operating on soft tissue. Also in the video, we discussed: • What led you to pursue your own innovation, rather than trying to buy something in? • How did you work out that there was a market for your innovation? • Did you experience competition from other innovators operating in your space?
