The recognition positions St. Louis as a leading contender for $160 million in federal funding to enhance the region’s neuroscience ecosystem, drive innovation, and create high-quality jobs. Last week, I participated in a four-member panel to evaluate pitches from the second cohort of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Innovative Fellows Training (LIFT) program. The LIFT program trains doctoral candidates and postdocs in the sciences on entrepreneurship and coaches them on how to take novel ideas related to aging from the bench to market. There was a mini “Shark Tank” vibe to this event where nine Fellows presented their ideas, market analysis, business plan, and needs to our expert panel for feedback. Our panel included neuroscientists, data scientists, an investor, and me! Pison is developing cutting-edge wearables and applications for tracking brain health and fatigue, which are both huge concerns for the aging population, so the LIFT focus area is very relevant. We heard about projects for businesses that would provide improved ·       Circadian rhythm monitoring in Alzheimer’s Disease, ·       “Matchmaking” for researchers and contract research organizations, ·       Treatment for mitochondrial DNA damage for macular degeneration, ·       Assessments of the microbiome through organoids, ·       Access to fruit fly stem cells to answer research questions, ·       Understanding of the roles of non-coding RNAs, oligodendrocyte precursor cells, and G-quadruplexes (three separate pitches). The LIFT program was established to help scientists prepare for a career in business, as not everyone will enter careers in academia. I was impressed by how far these Fellows have come in developing a business plan and strategy in just three months!

Rita Allen Foundation Scholars The Rita Allen Foundation Scholars program funds basic biomedical research in the fields of cancer, immunology, and neuroscience, as well as pain, through the Rita Allen Foundation Award in Pain. The Rita Allen Foundation Scholars program has supported more than 195 scientists since 1976. The program embraces innovative research with above-average risk and groundbreaking possibilities. Scholars have gone on to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the National Medal of Science, the Wolf Prize in Medicine and the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. https://lnkd.in/emEUsNr2

🚀 The Brain Innovation Days 2024 have just wrapped up, and what an incredible experience it was! 🌟 Organized by our amazing partner, the European Brain Council, this event involved talks and lectures on neuroscience and innovation. Our coordinator, Gianmaria Silvello from the Università degli Studi di Padova, had the privilege of participating in this fruitful meeting. 🤝🧠 Gianmaria was part of the BRAINTEASER Project sessions, which brought together key actors on the way from lab to the market to stress the power of collaboration to accelerate the translation from research into innovation. Brainteaser technology was developed with and tested by people living with MS and ALS from 4 different European cities.
