The elephant in the room: getting rid of gas ❌ The Government is aiming for 100% clean power by 2030 – the most ambitious target of any G7 nation 😲 National Energy System Operator define clean power as being 95% from clean sources, and Britain needs to reduce its share of gas from around 35% to 5% to meet this target. This is in line with the pace of reduction seen since 2010, and was achieved in just three years for coal ⚡ Eliminating gas will be much more difficult than this. Coal was replaced partly by gas, which can operate flexibly according to demand. Now, however, gas is displaced largely by wind and solar which require other technologies… The challenges are made more difficult still, as demand for electricity is expected to increase by 50% by 2035, requiring more capacity and greater flexibility to cope with bigger swings. Even a scaled back target of 95% clean power by 2030 requires a rapid phase-down of gas power and scale up of renewables. The UK’s progress towards its net zero targets should be applauded, as should the new Government’s ambitions to accelerate future progress 👏 To learn more about the UK’s journey towards net zero, download the full Electric Insights report through the link in the comments 👇

Drax Power Station has been keeping the UK’s lights on for over 50 years 💡 Drax Group UK has plans to deploy bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (#BECCS) at Drax Power Station – a unique technology that uses sustainable biomass to generate renewable energy while simultaneously removing carbon from the atmosphere. It will help the UK Government achieve its clean power by 2030 targets, while continuing to protect energy security 🔒 Learn more about the process in the new video series:
📺 We’re starting the new year by announcing the launch of our brand-new 6 episode video series all about the end-to-end process of the bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (#BECCS) journey. The first video provides an overview of the series, including… ⬇️ ⚡ The transformation of Drax Power Station: from once being Western Europe’s largest coal-fired power station, it is now the UK’s single-largest generator of renewable electricity and pioneering cutting edge BECCS technology. 🌿 Our commitment to sourcing sustainable #biomass and the pelletisation process - how we ensure this delivers positive outcomes for people, nature and climate. 🚢 The work we do to optimise our supply chain, making it as energy efficient and low-carbon as possible. 💡 The pivotal role of Drax Power Station in maintaining grid stability, providing reliable, renewable energy when needed. 🌍 BECCS - a unique technology that generates electricity while removing carbon from the atmosphere, playing an important role in tackling climate change. It’s theoretically possible to use green hydrogen as the bridge between renewable electricity and a range of applications or uses where few or no climate-neutral alternatives exist... 💭 For example, green hydrogen could allow wind power to transform into a transportation fuel for container ships. Or solar power could become a feedstock in industrial processes. In our latest article, we explore the benefits and risks of #GreenHydrogen, and how it can support #NetZero 👇

The recent surge in the price of Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origins (REGOs) has prompted the question ‘Are REGOs still worth buying?’ 🤔 The UK fuel mix is becoming ever-more renewable, and organisations have been asking whether this is enough to make sustainability claims – without the expense of buying REGOs. There’s scope to suggest that they’ll automatically be using a higher percentage of renewable power, and that this should enable them to report lower Scope 2 emissions without needing the proof REGOs provide. This isn’t true, though. Ultimately, corporates and customers are increasingly expecting their suppliers to evidence sustainability credentials. And asking whether suppliers source renewable energy – one of the simplest steps an organisation can take – is often the first question they’ll pose… Learn more about how buying REGOs helps promote your sustainability credentials, in our article linked in the comments 👇
