Earlier this year Alex Brown from the Open Skies Cornwall consortia took time out to talk to Drone Insurance Legend Simon Ritterband about how the Open Skies programme have enabled the procurement of the Zero Emission Pyka Pelican Cargo to the Skyports Drone Services fleet to trial future interoperability requirements of Open Skies partner Royal Mail. With the first beyond visual line of sight flights hosted over maritime waters here in 2024 in segregated airspace for this glorious and game changing aircraft: the team have now collected a whole stack of data from BVLOS ops to date to feed into the Civil Aviation Authority Intergrated Airspace Sandbox which is being progressed with the Open Skies tech team. Keep your eyes to the sky in 2025 as our electric dreams come into land!

Santa Claus has achieved an incredible, first of its kind, BVLOS Drone delivery waiver from the Civil Aviation Authority this year, that means children across the Open Skies Cornwall region will be able to get all their parcels delivered on time this Christmas In Cornwall Santa's ops will be the safest in the land thanks to the low level ADS-B sensor network we've rolled out on the Open Skies programme: the system sees everything below conventional Radar and it will be possible for other airspace users to see Santa and vice versa. Keeping Santa, all those presents, and other airspace users safe at all times. Santa will also have a secret weapon at his disposal to ensure his drones get to the right place at the right time. Parents across the land that have submitted their landing zone details on the Drone Delivery Register, a tool which has been developed on the Open Skies programme nationally for use by Royal Mail, will be able to achieve a guaranteed delivery. I would like to commend Santa and his team for their pioneering work and also offer the opportunity explore using their Civil Aviation Authority waiver to further assist the Santa supply chain with us on the Open Skies programme which is supported in every means imaginable by our programme partner Royal Mail. This week’s Throwback Thursday Tale takes us back exactly 40 years to when Careless Whisper was No1 in the UK Singles Charts, President Ronald Reagan this day re-secured the Republican nomination for US elections and the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles had drawn to a close. 1984 saw several new UK airlines take flight. Airways International Cymru with its pair of One-Eleven 300s; Anglo Cargo with its 707 Freighter; Brown Air; Connectair; Venture Airways with its HS748 at Coventry, which didn’t even last out the year; an enterprise called Virgin Atlantic with one 747, which many then thought wouldn’t last out the year. And alongside Virgin Atlantic, the only other survivor from the Class of ’84 took to the air on 22 August: Isles of Scilly Skybus. Formed as a subsidiary of the long-standing Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, the new airline was established for the Steamship Company to offer year-round connectivity to the Isles of Scilly (the passenger ferry doesn’t sail in winter).  Skybus set about establishing the link from Land’s End with BN2 Islanders - with an early example shown here, formerly flown by Aurigny. Today, Skybus still flies BN2 Islanders (three newer examples) alongside four Twin Otters – a fleet defined by the runway at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly. The first Twin Otter joined Skybus in 1994, and the aircraft was no stranger to the Isles of Scilly, previously being flown by Brymon Airways on its services from Plymouth and Saturday flights to Exeter and Bristol (as an extract of Brymon's 1990 timetable shows). G-BIHO has completed 30 years in Skybus service and is the longest-serving aircraft in any commercial UK airline’s fleet. Skybus services today link the Isles of Scilly with Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter.  Following closure of the British International helicopter service in 2012, the airline elected to focus on shorter routes into Scilly – previously having flown to Bristol and Southampton (and for a time, Plymouth - as seen in its 2000 timetable) – to maximise the number of roundtrips its aircraft could achieve in a day.  Every day counts: as a legacy of a change to the helicopter operations in the 1970s, St Mary’s Airport in Scilly is closed on Sundays, so Skybus flies only on six days of the week. As with many island air links, freight, mail and medical patient travel are all part of its business alongside a busy summer season tourism trade to the islands which lay 27 nautical miles from Land’s End.  Flying to a dog-friendly destination, Skybus is a dog-friendly airline too, with a dog box in Twin Otter’s cabin available to pre-book on every flight. Flights to Scilly on a clear day are a riot of colour, with azure blue seas giving way to Scilly’s green landscape.  It’s truly spectacular and certainly one of the enduring factors that keep customers coming back time and again – enough to sustain an airline through 40 years, which is no mean feat.
