2024 Naha Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture. It is beautifully landscaped with lots of palm and betel nut trees, green and tall Okinawa Pines, colorful flowers, blue skies and white clouds. The scenery here is very southern. Shurijo Castle still retains the same style from when it was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The stone paths nearby have a very local flavor to them. If you want to taste the local cuisine or go shopping, you have options ranging from department stores to souvenir shops all of which will give you an absolutely rewarding experience. At night choose one of the local favorite pubs to try Okinawan cuisine.

Howl's Moving Castle in Okinawa
#OkinawaTravel #100 Ways to Travel
There is even a Hull mobile castle in Okinawa? ! This castle is actually an izakaya, which attracts many tourists because of its unique appearance.
There are not many food choices, and the taste is average, but the photos are really great. I think I should try oysters, octopus sashimi and stir-fried bitters here. The oysters are only $20 each, and they are already fresh and sweet without the lemon juice.
Okinawa octopus is very famous, so each piece is very refreshing.
And bitter melon is really a must try, because it will sweeten.
You must go to this place if you want to take pictures when you are traveling

A Journey Through Time and Splendor: Shurijo Castle in Okinawa
Stepping into Shurijo Castle in Okinawa feels like traveling back to the prosperous era of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The castle walls, predominantly red, stand magnificently against the blue sky. The ancient architectural style harmonizes with the surrounding lush greenery, creating a sense of solemn yet harmonious beauty. As you ascend the stone steps, you can feel the weight of history and the marks of time, as if each brick is telling a story of the past.
Entering the main hall, the dazzling decorations leave you in awe. This place once gathered royalty and nobility, and the intricate wood carvings and color combinations showcase the unique beauty of Ryukyu culture. Through these delicate crafts, one can glimpse the prosperity of the dynasty and the cultural confidence of Ryukyu.
Standing at a high vantage point, you can overlook the entire Okinawa cityscape, with the wind carrying a faint salty scent from the distant sea. This visit to Shurijo Castle not only allows you to feel the breath of history but also the profound cultural heritage of this land.
Okinawa Naha Three-Day Two-Night Trip
I almost forgot about the free three-day two-night round-trip ticket from Hong Kong Express last year. In a rush, I booked a suitable hotel for work just one day before the trip and arranged a taxi. However, I overslept the next day and woke up just an hour before the flight, missing my flight for the first time in my life. The hotel was non-refundable, so I checked my phone and found a Hong Kong Airlines flight five hours later (which was also the last flight of the day). I immediately booked it for 1400 HKD. Fortunately, the unused HK Express outbound ticket didn't affect the return trip, and I could apply for a tax refund. This incident once again proved that there's no such thing as a completely free lunch 😂.
In Okinawa, I quickly adapted to the local lifestyle. While working at the hotel to avoid the scorching sun, I explored the International Street for food, took a city walk, and enjoyed the sea. This place uniquely blends the cultures of China, Japan, and the US. The subtropical atmosphere, stone lions, red lacquer colors, and roof styles all reflect the influence of ancient Chinese palace architecture, giving me a nostalgic feeling of walking through old streets in southern China. The locals in Okinawa are particularly friendly and hospitable. Using Google Translate, I chatted about the differences between Chinese and Japanese travel experiences and was even escorted back to my hotel 😅.
Next, I'll get my HK driver's license and fully enjoy the beach and sunshine, looking forward to the rebirth of Shuri Castle in 2026!

Okinawa's Sea.
This time, I visited a place in Japan that has a slightly different vibe compared to other locations. Unlike Osaka or Tokyo, Okinawa feels like a place full of youthful energy, where you can enjoy the sun and the beach.
A must-visit spot in Okinawa is Shuri Castle. Although a fire in 2019 destroyed most of the buildings, I still went there to satisfy my curiosity and for the sense of ritual. The place was crowded with visitors, and many well-preserved structures could still be seen. As for the main castle, we could observe its restoration progress from outside the fence, witnessing the meticulous craftsmanship of Japan. For travelers interested in exploring Japanese history, it remains a worthwhile destination.
Okinawa's beaches are among the best in Asia. The endless sea paired with vast grasslands makes it perfect for family outings and relaxation. During sunset, you can witness a perfect sunset as the sun slowly dips into the horizon, accompanied by various aircraft taking off and landing, making it a truly dreamy experience.

Come to Okinawa, eat beautiful meals with interesting people, and visit fun shops
Come to Kokusai Street in Okinawa, the primary task is to shop and eat. Let me recommend a few divine little shops I've visited!
✨Gourmet Section
👉Ryukyu no Gyu
When in Okinawa, how can you not try the authentic Ishigaki beef? Just look at the distinct marbling to know the meat quality is exceptional. It's tender and juicy, and they even provide a Chinese menu, how considerate!
👉Shima Shabu Shabu NAKAMA
Compared to Ishigaki beef, I recommend the Agu black pork here. The portions are generous, the meat is full and absorbs the sweetness of the broth, very authentic. Additionally, their pork patties are also quite delicious.
👉Pork Tamago Onigiri
A popular rice ball in Okinawa, there's always a long line of tourists every time I pass by. Their pork and egg rice ball is quite solid, one is enough to fill you up, making it suitable for breakfast.
👉Blue Seal
High in appearance and taste, the sea salt ice cream is especially popular. It's big, with a rich milky flavor and a slight salty taste, perfect for summer.
👉Nanmura
A ramen recommended by locals, it's said that the broth is made from pork bones simmered for 20 hours, no wonder it tastes so fragrant. The owner is also generous with the ingredients, the large pieces of char siu are very appetizing.
✨Shopping Section
👉Toys "R" Us
A shopping paradise where kids don't want to leave once they enter, the variety of toys is extraordinary. Just the Pikachu products alone are dazzling. Additionally, educational toys suitable for 0-3 year-old babies are worth buying.
👉Nishimatsuya
A one-stop flagship store for mother and baby products, from diapers to strollers, everything is available, making it suitable for moms to shop. Plus, with the current depreciation of the yen, it's even more cost-effective to shop here.
👉Stussy
A local trendy clothing store with reasonable prices. Their clothes not only come in various styles but are also very comfortable to wear. The staff are also very friendly, and I bought several pieces here.
Shuri Castle: A Symbol of Power in the Ryukyu Kingdom
Revisit Okinawa and its Tiramisu-colored Shuri Castle, once the symbol of power for the Ryukyu Kingdom. Surrounded by a vast moat and towering walls, the castle stands majestically. Passing through the red and yellow outer courtyard, the fiery red palace stands prominently, dazzling in its splendor.
The main hall, a wooden structure, was highly susceptible to fire in the hot weather. After my visit in 2019, it was almost entirely destroyed by a fire later that year. The complete restoration is expected to be finished by 2026.
Ryukyu's limestone geology was used for the stone gates and walls, and while thatched stone houses were common, wooden structures were rare. Only the Shuri Castle palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom used wood on such a large scale, showcasing its wealth and prosperity.
The entire Shuri Castle Park is quite large. Besides the palace complex under restoration, the surrounding areas are free to enter. It's conveniently accessible by taking the monorail to Shuri Station and walking for about 15 minutes. The Shurijo-kan at the entrance has strong air conditioning in its shops and restaurant rest areas, making it a comfortable place to rest after a long walk.
Relaxing Okinawa Trip
Okinawa is unforgettable with its beautiful scenery, rich culture, and delicious food.
First, we visited the Naminoue Shrine. This shrine, located in Naha city, is nestled in a tranquil environment by the mountains and the water. Perched atop a cliff, it overlooks the azure sea, offering a magnificent view. The shrine's unique architectural style, with its red main hall set against green trees and blue sky, is strikingly vibrant. After paying our respects, we took a leisurely stroll along the coast, enjoying the gentle sea breeze.
Next, we headed to Shuri Castle. Symbolic of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it bears witness to Okinawa's long history. Despite damage from a fire, the restored castle remains imposing and spectacular. Walking on the ancient walls, we not only felt the weight of history but also enjoyed the beautiful view of Naha city. The exhibitions inside the castle provided a detailed account of the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which was very enlightening.
After soaking in the culture, we went to American Village. With its exotic atmosphere, it felt as if we were in a small American town. There are a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment facilities. We browsed through many interesting stores, picking up souvenirs, and the night view was particularly enchanting.
Cuisine is an indispensable part of the Okinawa trip. We savored delicious steak at the famous 88 Steak restaurant. Known for its tender, juicy meat and unique sauce, the restaurant's lively atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home.
Additionally, we visited the A&W burger joint. Unique to Okinawa, A&W's signature burgers and root beer are mouthwatering. We ordered the classic A&W burger with a refreshing root beer, simple yet incredibly tasty, making it an unforgettable meal of the trip.
In summary, our trip to Okinawa allowed us to experience its rich history and culture, enjoy the beautiful natural scenery, and taste authentic cuisine. Every moment was filled with surprises and joy. Okinawa is truly a travel destination that makes you want to return again and again.
Naha City First Makishi Public Market
The Makishi Market has a history of over 60 years
Located in Naha, Okinawa, the First Makishi Public Market (commonly known as Makishi Market) is referred to as the 'Kitchen of Okinawa.' It specializes in a variety of fresh local seafood, Agu pork, Ishigaki beef, and other fresh ingredients. The market also offers many local Okinawan seasonings, spicy oils, and seaweed as souvenirs. Visitors can haggle with vendors to buy seafood at the Makishi Market.
The entire Makishi Market has two floors. The first floor is the ingredient area with many stalls selling fresh seafood such as lobsters, crabs, and luminous clams.
After selecting your seafood, you can go to the restaurants on the second floor of the Makishi Market for processing and cooking. It seems that each vendor has a fixed restaurant partner.
Makishi Market is located next to the bustling Kokusai Street in Okinawa. From the Don Quijote store on Kokusai Street, walk into the Market Hon-dori Shopping Street, and you can reach it in 2 minutes. If you take the monorail, get off at Makishi Station or Miebashi Station, and it's an 8-10 minute walk. The transportation is very convenient.
Business Hours: April to September 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM; October to March 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Transportation: Monorail Makishi Station, Miebashi Station
Naha Seafood Market in Japan, a super nice local market with a must-visit cultural atmosphere
Naha | A seafood market that seafood lovers must go to, Okinawa kitchen seafood to enjoy to the fullest
Japanese cuisine always dazzles people, and for someone who really likes lively eating like myself, it is an essential part of the experience. When traveling to Okinawa, why not check out the very famous Makishi Public Market.
•
The market is located in the center of Naha city and is a well-known agricultural market in Okinawa. There are plenty of cooking ingredients available, and what is surprising is that the markets in Japan are very clean, neat and tidy, and there is hardly any fishy smell, making it feel like there is no difference between browsing the market and shopping at a mall.
-
On the first floor, there are various ingredients, pork, beef, and some fresh produce, but what attracts me the most is the sashimi and seafood. It must be said that Japan has a really diverse variety of sea cucumbers, and the colorful seafood, many of which I am seeing for the first time, are so vibrant that one can imagine how delicious they must be.
-
There are two ways of cooking here, one is to fry first or go directly for sashimi, and they can all be cooked on the spot. After cooking, you can go to the second floor to dine. The first floor has shops selling fish, flavored snacks, and processed products, while the second floor is a food street where you can taste Okinawan cuisine and Chinese cuisine.
It must be said that the seafood here is especially fresh, and also very sweet by itself. The first time I tasted such sweet sea urchin, it was truly refreshing and very sweet.
-
Of course, you can also buy a lot of cute Okinawan sweets and snacks here. Their packaging is very attractive, and I couldn't help but buy a bunch to take home!
Okinawa Souvenir: The Salt Specialty Store.
Okinawa has a must-visit place for many tourists: Here you can choose from famous sea salt souvenirs, and you must try their salt ice cream. Why? Because you can sprinkle various flavors of salt on the ice cream, such as green tea, citrus, hibiscus, and even chili flavor. It's super addictive!
Salt Specialty Store Shioya
📍3-9-2-1F Makishi, Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture (900-0013)
*Remember to also stop by the Calbee store across the street to buy Okinawa-limited flavor potato chips
Hot Springs in the Bustling City! Okinawa Naha Sansui Hotel.
Although Okinawa is not famous for hot springs, there are still some if you want to take a dip. The 'Ryukyu Onsen Senagajima Hotel' is well-located, not far from the airport, Naminoue Shrine, and Kokusai Dori. There's also a shuttle bus from the airport, making it perfect for a soak right after landing.
Most of the rooms here are quite small, but I personally think that even booking a slightly larger room is not expensive and offers good value for money. This time I booked a room with a private bath, which might be a bit awkward facing the city view, but once you sit down, you can still see a bit of the sea. You have to go to the large public bath for the hot spring, which is colorless and odorless, but it seems to have a quite noticeable effect on relieving fatigue!
The buffet breakfast here is a must! The restaurant is not big, but the variety of food and the care in presentation are truly astonishing. They even cultivate Okinawa's specialty sea grapes with water and oxygen, which is so fresh and impressive. There's also made-to-order Wagyu beef sushi, bitter melon juice, tempura, alcoholic beverages - it's so luxurious! The pork tofu soup is also highly recommended.
One thing to note is that the hotel does not have a free parking lot, and the traffic nearby is a bit complicated, so it's best to go out in groups at night. Other than that, it's really suitable to start or end your Okinawa trip with a hot spring here!
Naha city walk, you can't finish walking even if you break your legs
The best way to understand the charm of a city is to measure it with your steps and slowly feel the breath of the city.
Confident in our own physical and walking strength, we put this into practice, but in the end, we still took the bus back to the hotel.
I thought that the small Okinawa Naha would be easy to conquer, but because it was too good to stroll around, the route was too long and we ended up exhausted.
✅ Itinerary:
Kokusai Dori — Makishi Public Market — Tsuboya Pottery Street
✅ Introduction to 【Kokusai Dori】
⭕️ It should be the busiest place in Naha, very close to Naha Airport and the port, shopping and transportation are very convenient.
⭕️ Whether it's Okinawan specialties, various foods, or cosmetics, there's everything you need, and if you don't know what to buy for souvenirs, just look around here.
⭕️ There are many shops selling ceramics and glassware on the street, with relatively uniform styles. If you really want to buy, you can go to the pottery street later.
⭕️ Many shops have glass boxes at the entrance with a coconut crab inside, if you want to eat, you can go to Makishi Public Market later.
⭕️ The purple sweet potato tarts here are quite famous, so we bought a pack to try, they are dry, just taste a little, not recommended.
⭕️ Miyako Island's snow salt ice cream, their ice cream can be sweet or salty, full of milk flavor, those who like the taste of sea salt must not miss it.
✅ Introduction to 【Makishi Public Market】
⭕️ Makishi Public Market is right next to Kokusai Dori, the overall environment is much cleaner and tidier, more like a large fresh supermarket.
⭕️ In terms of price, Tomari Port is more favorable, but Makishi Public Market has many other categories besides seafood, such as beef, pickles, etc.
⭕️ Both markets have seafood stalls that can be processed, and the stalls have Chinese-speaking staff, so don't worry about language barriers.
⭕️ The market is divided into two floors, with sales downstairs and processing upstairs. The processing fee is additional, 500 yen/person, 3 styles, and the delicious seafood porridge only accepts cash💰.
⭕️ In Japan, noctiluca and giant clams are edible, and in the market, you can also see porcupine fish and coconut crabs, just like visiting an aquarium.
⭕️ At Makishi office, we ordered a lobster, a geoduck, and a scallop for a total of 15,900 yen, about 750 RMB, which would cost at least double in China.
⭕️ The lobster was half sashimi and half boiled in soup, the geoduck was sashimi, and the scallop was with garlic. Because they were all fresh, all the cooking methods were extremely delicious.
⭕️ The giant clam, which is often seated in China, has a special stench, and we didn't try it in the end. If you're interested, you can give it a try.
✅ Introduction to 【Tsuboya Pottery Street】
⭕️ Passing through the Makishi office market, you can reach the pottery street.
⭕️ The pottery shops here are not big, small enough to accommodate 7 or 8 people.
⭕️ Each shop has its own characteristics, and I really like the time spent shuttling between these shops.
⭕️ There are several well-known small shops, such as Yacchi & moon, which have their own designed and produced pottery, as well as some mass-produced ones. In short, the pottery here has more design sense.
⭕️ It is said that most of Okinawa's pottery comes from this pottery street. If you pick carefully, there is always one that suits you.
⚠️ Notes:
⭕️ Because the route is quite long, it is recommended to rent a bicycle.
⭕️ Naha has shared bicycles, 1800 yen/day, but there may be no space when returning the bike. Also, there is a shop in Kokusai Dori that rents formal bicycles, but they must be returned before 7 pm, not highly recommended.
⭕️ Okinawa's Wagyu is very famous, you can find a place near Kokusai Dori to try Wagyu, but don't order too much, I'm afraid you'll be overwhelmed by the oil.
Jack's Steakhouse, an Old-Fashioned Steakhouse in Naha, Okinawa, Japan
Jack's Steakhouse, an old-fashioned steakhouse in Naha, Okinawa, is located near Asahibashi Station. The taste is good, and the prices are reasonable, but be prepared to wait in a long line, mostly filled with locals. Even though the turnover is quick, you can't expect to be seated without waiting for at least 30 minutes if you arrive around 8 or 9 in the evening.
They have a menu in Chinese, and the main item to order is steak. You can choose from filet, New York strip, or hamburger steak, and select the size based on your appetite. The meal comes with salad, thick soup, and white rice! Yes, in Japan, steak is often eaten with white rice, which is quite enjoyable given the quality of Japanese rice.
The steakhouse offers an American-style rough and hearty approach to steak, encouraging you to eat your meat in big bites! The beef is tender and delicious, served on a sizzling hot plate, exuding a fragrant aroma. They also offer Mexican tacos and boneless fried chicken.
Visiting this local, old-fashioned family restaurant in Naha for a steak that the locals love feels similar to eating at popular steak restaurants in Taiwan like Sun Dong Po or Wo Jia Beef Brand. The simple deliciousness is also a way to experience the local life.
【Okinawa】The door to an unexpectedly cute and stylish cafe.
Head to the incredibly stylish cafe 4klett (Secret) in Kumoji, Naha City.
The entrance is disguised as a vending machine, which might puzzle first-time visitors 🩷
Once you open the door, you're greeted by a surprising contrast of a bookshelf 📚
It's rare to find a cafe where cuteness overflows right from the entrance!
The interior, with its exposed concrete, is simple and stylish, a stark change from the entrance 💅
And the food is both delicious and fashionable!
Highly recommended for girls' gatherings or dates in Naha City.
[Okinawa] If you're looking for a stylish hotel stay in Naha, this is the place.
If you're looking for a stylish hotel stay in Naha city, this is it!
Southwest Grand Hotel🏨
It's within walking distance from Kokusai Street, but once you enter the hotel, you're instantly in a calm atmosphere✨
The hotel's pool is a space where you can relax in the sparkling light of natural sunlight.
It was really nice to be able to enjoy the sauna along with the pool!
From the jacuzzi, you can have a panoramic view of Naha city✨
The rooms have a gentle atmosphere with the warmth of wood.
The bathtub was spacious and relaxing🛁
And in the lounge exclusive to guests, you could enjoy drinks and light meals, and they even had Blue Seal ice cream🍨
The restaurant for breakfast was a stylish space where we had a delicious breakfast🩷
Even though many people in Naha city mainly focus on sightseeing and just sleep at the hotel, I really want you to relax and enjoy your hotel stay here!
A person does not rent a car, and plays all over Okinawa in two days on the weekend
Okinawa is really an island that you can visit at any time during a Shanghai weekend, with cheap flights, a short flight time of just over an hour, and reasonable prices.☺️
✅Cost: Airfare 1100+ Hotel 1500+ Gourmet 1000+ Local Transportation 300+ Hot Spring 100, about 4000 in total, you can save a lot on hotels and food
✅Transportation:
📍The city mainly uses monorail (you can use the Suica card, and it's worth buying a day pass if you use it more than 3 times)
📍The central and northern parts can be accessed by bus, car rental (cannot use a Chinese driver's license), or chartered car. It takes over 100 stops by bus, and it's slow. You can't rent a car with a Chinese driver's license, and chartering a car is not cost-effective for one person, so I joined a bus day tour
✅City attractions

4️⃣American Village⭐⭐⭐
An American-style town with many bars, it's close to a base so there are many Americans, suitable for shopping and casual strolling, taking photos with exotic scenery, and those who love photography should like it

Kokusaidori Street - Naha, Okinawa
Kokusaidori Street is a popular street amongst tourists, located at the heart of Naha. The street has many restaurants, ranging from the traditional Japanese style dining such as izakaya, yakitori, yakiniku - and of course an Okinawan style restaurant. Additionally, there are many shops selling specialty Okinawan gifts, ranging from the purple sweet potato themed treats and ice creams to the signature Okinawan jewellery which features a crystal like blue that resembles the oceans in Okinawa.

This hotel is like an art gallery, with large paintings as soon as you enter. Even if you don't understand art appreciation, you will be deeply attracted by the high-end aesthetic taste! White walls, blue sea, and bright colored paintings, no matter how you take pictures, they all look good!!
👍Most recommended:
The hotel is located under the bridge. Before going there, I always thought it would be depressing and with poor scenery. But sitting in the hotel lobby and restaurant, watching the sea, there is a unique sense of security and openness. The gallery on the 2nd floor has a lot of works by young Japanese artists 👩🎨, and they also invite musicians to come and hold events from time to time. It can be said that it is very unique.
📝Attention tips:
Here is very close to Pohang, you can walk to the pier and depart to other small islands for fun. Friends who want to island hop can make a good travel plan.
Okinawa Attraction: Naha/Surrounding Area
1. Kokusai dori
Address - (type the title and find the closest point of entrance)
Highlights - If you have time to visit the city, then Kokusai is the must-see destination. The pictures don’t capture it but it’s a very busy street with shops that have Okinawa goodies, snacks, notable knickknacks, and etc. It’s a great place to walk around and window shop as well. The main road also serves as a main road for people who want to ride real life Mario Karts!
Rating - 4!!!
2. Shuri Castle
Address - 1 Chome-2 Shurikinjocho, Naha, Okinawa 903-0815, Japan
Highlights - Although the castle burned down due to an accident that took place in 2019, you can still visit the castle grounds and learn about the history. I recommend visiting this place if you’re around Naha, as it is one of the significant places of Okinawa history when it was known as the Kingdom of Ryukyu.

Okinawa, Japan
Okinawa, Japan is an outlying island in Japan. Although it is a small island, it is very beautiful. You can also go to the Ocean Museum and go through the underwater tunnel to watch the dolphin show. It is the first time I have seen bread so big. I can smell it thickly from a distance. It smells like bread, and they pay great attention to hygiene when eating!
OKINAWA
Known as the "Miracle Mile" for its miraculous recovery in the blink of an eye after World War II, Naha's Kokusaidori Street is a classic Okinawa sightseeing spot, bustling with tourists coming and going from souvenir shops to eateries.
