Sous-commission "Droits de l'homme"

Elected in 2024, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty will hold his first debate with DROI Members on 18 February, from 15.00 to 16.00. This exchange is part of DROI's round of initial contacts with its main institutional counterparts on the human rights' international stage. Topics such as the war in Ukraine and the fight against impunity, respect for human rights in the context of asylum and migration and attacks to the Rule of Law in Europe will be discussed.

The Subcommittee on Human Rights held an exchange of view on Syria: Truth, justice and accountability on 28 January 2025. Audience had the chance to listen to victims led by civil society organizations representatives Yasmen Almashan and Mazen Darwish. In addition, the subcommittee was hosting Robert Petit, Head of the IIIM (International Impartial and Independent Mechanism) and connected with Karla Quintana, Head of the new Independent Institution on Missing Persons (IIMP).

On Monday 27 January, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr Volker Türk addressed the Members of DROI and AFET for the first time this term. The meeting provided a timely opportunity to discuss the human rights situation in the world and the High Commissioner’s work at the UN level. The European Parliament remained strongly committed to supporting the independence of the Office of the High Commissioner and its leadership role in protecting and promoting human rights across the globe.
