Lifestyle Director Mike Christensen goes a more zany but undeniably smart route: a fancy dog poo bag holder. “These days, the bowel movements of my mother’s dog (a Tibetan Terrier called Kenzo, btw) get a lot of airtime. So here’s to making at least one part of the whole carrying-poo-bags-with-you chic.”

How I chose the best gifts for mums

Choosing a gift for your mum is a subjective endeavour, which is why I've tried to present a wide variety of options from very different categories: while I do like to dabble in the cliché, I also present things like jigsaws, DIY biscuit icing boxes and tickets to ABBA Voyage in order to cater to the diverse types of mum to be found outside traditionally narrow gifting categories. As British GQ's in-house gifting expert, I (Jessie Atkinson) work across 25+ gift guides, attending launches, trying out products of all kinds that would make great presents and personally selecting from my own favourite things (currently, I can't get enough of my Eberjey pyjamas, and my mum loves the Maison Balzac glassware I bought her last year). Elsewhere, I've selected products and experiences that have excellent customer feedback and/or are provided by brands that we’ve tried and loved before.

Best Overall Gifts for Mums

If you want to be rid of the pressures of Christmas gifting in 1, 2, 3, these are your most prominent lifelines. Somewhat of a one stop shop, The White Company has cashmere-streaked socks, cosy robes and faux fur warmers, as well as diffusers and candles in abundance. For the latter, Neom is also a dab hand at candle-making, while Mejuri and Monica Vinader hold the answer to your affordable-but-still-quality jewellery prayers. Some other easy solutions: knitwear, glassware, sleepwear, and cheese and wine (duh).

The White Company

Dressing Gown

The White Company should always be your first port of call for gorgeous, spa-grade things just like this snug robe, which looks stolen from a 5 star hotel.

Mejuri

Silver/Gold Hoop Earrings

Despite its surprisingly affordable prices, Mejuri's jewellery is of wonderful quality in both gold and silver (of which these earrings have both).

Cheesegeek

Stevie Hamper

An eating and drinking extravaganza featuring a belting 850g of cheese (soft, hard and blue) as well as a bottle of red or white wine paired by the experts.

Adidas

Gazelle Trainers

The Adidas Gazelle could well be the trainer of 2024, and this gorgeous blue colourway is currently is one of our favourites.

Neom

Christmas Wish Scented Candle

A Christmas candle that prioritises wellbeing (through essential oils) as well as festive joy (through cinnamon and mandarin).

Desmond & Dempsey

Soleia Keep It Cosy Gift Set

GQ's favourite pyjama brand Get warm and snuggly this winter with Desmond & Dempsey's sumptuous sleepwear accessories.

Bloom & Wild

Flower Subscription

A one-off order from (or a stint with) a flower delivery service is your solution to never, ever, ever buying petrol station flowers again.

Carl Friedrik

Leather Ashby Tote Bag

A one-of-a-kind bag for a one-of-a-kind woman: no one works leather like Carl Friedrik, and no one will wear it quite like your mum.

Chapel Down

Sparkling Wine

The Chapel Down vineyard is pumping out some of the best sparkling wine since the region of Champagne got the hang of aging and riddling.

Papier

Photo Book

The instant photo scrapbook you've always wanted to make from scratch without anywhere near as much of the effort.

Aesop

Majestic Melodies Gift Set

Some of my favourite ever body and hand balms come in this gift set alongside a body cleanser and a big bottle of the status symbol that is Resurrection Aromatique hand wash.

ABBA Voyage

Tickets

ABBA Voyage at its own special arena in east London has become an essential pilgrimage for fans of the band, pop music and wearing lots of glitter.

Best Christmas Gifts for Mums

Even if you're buying something that's not explicitly festive, Christmas gifts still have a magical edge by virtue of being under a tree and enclosed in gingerbread print wrapping paper. As such, fragrance, cashmere socks and a special gadget she's wanted for ages (like a Kindle) feel almost as in the spirit as a pair of Christmas PJs or a fragrant wreath.

Jo Malone

Bath & Body Set

Irresistible to most mums, Jo Malone’s fresh and fragrant home scents are ideal if you have the budget.

Arket

Alpaca Blend Jumper

In my work with Heidi Quill and the team at British GQ, I’ve come to the conclusion that Arket is one of the very best high street stores for affordable, high-quality clothes.

Rachel Jackson

Mama Necklace

Get her cutesy jewellery signpost from Rachel Jackson for guaranteed quality.

Drowsy

Silk Sleep Eye Mask

The best thing for beds since mattresses replaced palettes.

Freddie's Flowers

A pleasant-smelling alternative to the bouquet you usually buy her.

Chelsea Peers

Lulu Guinness takes a moment away from its iconic lips logo in favour of pearl-like beads on this glamorous makeup bag.

Timberland

Plaited Melange Mitten

Come December, more mittens are never, ever a bad idea.

ghd

Glide Hot Brush

Scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could make a hair brush/straightener hybrid that they didn't consider whether they should. Thankfully, the result — ghd's Glide hot brush — is exceedingly safe as well as a beauty phenomenon.

Kindle

PaperWhite

Present the PaperWhite to a mother who loves a bit of Wolf Hall but isn’t so much of a fan of holding it.

Best Affordable Gifts for Mums

You can still score maximum brownie points from minimal budget, as this edit of things costing £35 and under proves quite neatly. Some of the loveliest bathroom concoctions are a little pricey to buy for oneself on a regular basis, but are eminently affordable when bought for another. A sentimental mug (if you haven't already bought her one recently) is a terrific way to remind her of you every time she has a tea. Come to think of it, tea (the fancy kind) isn't such a bad idea, either.

Anna + Nina

Love You Mug

I don’t care what anyone says: no amount of mugs is too many mugs.

Neom

Shower Cream

At once cleansing and hydrating, plus it smells divine.

Marks & Spencer

Speckled Wine Glasses

All together, now: "thank you M&S for being there for every conceivable shopping assignment".

Blondie's Kitchen

A big old slab of the best cookie dough discovered since records began.

Whittard

Tea Discovery Collection

The ideal accompaniment to a big box of Biscuiteers bakes? A cup or five of Whittard tea.

It’s all well and good buying your mum trinkets every time her birthday rolls around, but where is she keeping all of these wonderful gifts you’re furnishing her with?

Emma Bridgewater

Cheesegeek

The impossibly popular Charlotte Tilbury moisturiser, in bauble form for Crimbo.

Leiho

Uplift & Focus Soy Wax Candle

Uplifting sandalwood and orange for post-Christmas wind-downs.

Best Homeware Gifts for Mums

A vase (filled with flowers, please) is perhaps the most often deployed of homeware gifts, but there's an almost unlimited selection of other things that you could consider. A coffee table book, silk pillowcase or novelty jug are some of my favourites, but you could go completely off-piste with a pair of leopard book ends or a chopping board personalised with her own mum's hand-written recipe.

Oliver Bonas

Diffuser

This ceramic diffuser will mist and infuse any room with whatever blend of essential oils she fancies trying.

John Lewis

Silk Pillowcase

A beauty secret that fends off fine lines and frizzy hair, the silk pillowcase is one of my first recommendations of gifts that suits pretty much everyone.

Assouline

Ibiza Bohemia

The ultimate dedication to the parties and luxury that Ibiza has become known for.

Grind

French Press Gift Set

Grind knows that vintage motorcycles were onto something with all of that chrome, which is why this French press gift set uses all-over stainless steel to imitate mid-century aesthetics.

Jo Loves

Pomelo Diffuser

Not content to rest on only exquisite ingredients, Jo Malone’s brand Jo Loves also dedicates itself to beautiful packaging.

Arket

Vase

Flower delivery service or local florist: pair your choice with a lovely new vase for an extra boost.

Simba

Hybrid Pillow

A pillow might be low on the Family Fortunes style list of Things To Buy As A Gift, but I've found it to be a dark horse in the present-giving game.

Gluggle Jug

An open-mouthed fish in a series of colours, this is a receptacle that can be used as a vase, a water jug or just a wavey ornament in the kitchen.

Sitting Leopard Ornaments

These sitting leopards have the appearance of sphynx appointed to guard your mum’s front step, bookshelf or kitchen counter.

Heating & Plumbing London Wool Throw

An extremely attractive alternative to turning up the thermostat.

GustoLeatherDesigns

Personalised Chopping Board

Send in a picture of a handwritten recipe and Gusto Designs will laser etch the wood for you. A keepsake that won’t end up in the attic.

Tekla

Hand Towel

This striped Tekla towel is composed of organic cotton and looks good enough to eat.

Best Fashion & Beauty Gifts for Mums

Your girlfriend may be picky when it comes to the makeup you buy her, but there'll be no flies on your mum, either. If you're going to do this properly then you're best either replacing a treasured skincare product she's running out of, or choosing something from a brand she already wears a lot. Your other option is to take a punt at something you have a feeling about: if it's from a brand like Molton Brown, Laneige or Marc Jacobs, you're unlikely to go too far wrong.

Balzac Paris Sweatshirt

I can see this Balzac Paris sweater being worn by Farrah Fawcett on her skateboard in the 1970’s.

Currentbody

Skin LED Series 2 Special Kit

The anti-ageing LED face mask by Currentbody alongside a bottle of green tea serum and a five-pack of hydrogel face masks.

Radley

Dover Street Leather Bag

A sleek, supple everyday handbag that wouldn't look out of place on a Victoria Beckham RTW runway.

Molton Brown

Rose Dunes Eau de Parfum

An all-rounder fragrance for a special birthday. It also made for a lovely just-because gift to my own mum.

Veja

Campo Leather Lace Up Trainers

The leather trainers taking over the world.

Laneige

Water Sleeping Mask

A cooling gel-like cream, Laneige's Water Sleeping Mask goes on like a dream and sees you wake up plush with moisture.

Marc Jacobs

Tote Bag

The smallest version of that Marc Jacobs tote bag, this is the most affordable entry into one micro-trend that just isn’t going away.

Missoma

Molten Cuff Bracelet

If you’re going to give jewellery, particularly to a platonic or non-romantic giftee, simple is almost always better.

Taschen

Issey Miyake

A spectacular retrospective on the late Issey Miyake and his transformative work in fashion and wider culture.

New Balance

530 Trainers

Perhaps, on reflection, the moniker of dad sneaker was a little exclusionary: who among us doesn’t have a mum who’d also love her own pair of New Balances?

Champo

Pitta Lash Serum

A vegan formula more than three years in the making. And if you ask our pic editor Josie, it works.

Then I Met You

Purify & Plump Duo

The Korean skincare revolution is in its salad days, and Then I Met You's cleansing balm/gel cream combo are part of the reason.

Best Gift Ideas for the Mum Who Has Everything

I've met the kind of mothers who have seven bags by the same brand in their dust covers and a co-ord in every colour, so I completely understand how some Christmases can feel a lot like contributing to a problem. Still, there are ways around it. Experience gifts intended for the two of you top my list, but how about a book (a new release or a clothbound special edition from Folio Society) or a DIY project? Shopping isn't all frivolous (just don't tell her that).

Sculpd

Candle Making Kit

If your mum has completed what seems to be every DIY project on god's green earth, then it's time to move her onto the big guns and set her up with her own candle-making kit.

Lounge

Quarter Zip Sweater

A cosy everyday wear kind of jumper that’s smart enough for brunch but cosy enough for comfort wear, it’s also available in dark green, light grey, camel and black.

Folio Society

Their Eyes Were Watching God - Zora Neale Hurston

A stunning edition of a classic book: just one of many available from the delightful Folio Society.

Always Personal

Transparent Jigsaw

Meet the beastliest of puzzles; the final boss of jigsaws; a completely transparent 70, 150 or 330 piece challenge.

Olivia & Pearl

Oh So Fine Necklace

Delicate and poised, this necklace from Olivia & Pearl makes the perfect gift for showing your mother dearest how much she means to you.

Biscuiteers DIY Gingerbread House

A culinary-meets-DIY gift: one which will put her icing skills to the test.

Virgin Experience Days

Kew Gardens & Cream Tea Experience for Two

She may not be allowed to buy any of the rare mini waterlilies, but your mum will be able to collect some of the world's most interesting flora with her eyes and camera lens — followed by a self-serve afternoon tea in one of three eateries.

LSW London

Habit Notes

It’s all very well and good downloading a habit-making app, but nothing motivates quite like hand writing a goal.

Monica Vinader

Beaded Bracelet

Beautifully understated and relatively affordable yet stunning.

Cutter & Squidge

Afternoon Tea at Home Hamper

Whether they’re a jam-on-first or a cream-on-first kind of person, an afternoon tea will always hit the spot

Antler

Expandable Icon Stripe Cabin Suitcase

Another certified hit from Antler, this time in the form of a glossy green moulded stripe cabin case with magical expandable properties.

Maison Balzac

Le Twist Cocktail Glass

Short on citrus? Never again, thanks to this Maison Balzac glass, intended for fruity cocktails. One look and you'll be taken by the entire collection.

Best Luxury Gifts for Mums

If your budget is as flush as a winter complexion, I've got some wonderful suggestions, starting with my favourite perfume launch of the year: Creed's opulent Queen of Silk. Then there's some things that everyone (but especially your mum) would love: a sweatshirt from Anine Bing, some colourful AirPod Max headphones from Apple, or a magnum of sparkling wine. Hampers from reputable brands are also always a wise place to spend your money.

Creed

Queen of Silk

As one of the best-regarded and luxurious perfume houses in the world, I always take notice when Creed drops a new fragrance. Queen of Silk does not disappoint.

Piglet in Bed

Gingham Linen Pyjama Trousers

The brand behind some of interiors expert Daphne Bugler's favourite linen bedding.

Anine Bing

Logo Sweatshirt

Anine Bing is to the elegant what Gap is to preppy youths and Adanola is to twenty-something pilates princesses.

Apple

AirPods Max

Perfect for a classic ABBA mum, a rebellious Prodigy mother or an elegant classical fan.

Swaine

English Garden Scented Candle

My mum loves hers so much, she makes sure to burn it bit by bit in order to make it last.

Chanel

Chance

An enduring fragrance on women’s dressing tables for its understated and sophisticated motivation.

Tiffany & Co.

Lead Crystal Heart Box

Lucky for you (and your mum), one of these heart boxes will set you back less than £100.

Rathfinny

2017 Blanc de Blancs Magnum

English sparkling wine is on the front foot; watch your back, France!

Dorchester Collection

Festive Essentials Hamper

There are 13 Dorchester-made stars in this essentials hamper, but if you ask Rob Leedham, it's all about the vanilla shortbreads.

MZ Skin Anti Pollution Mask

Detoxifying, soothing and hydrating, it’s the all-round experience a high-end face mask should be.

Seventy One Gin

Gin & Books Hamper

Books and gin. To be more precise: Inferno, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wuthering Heights and a bottle of Seventy One gin.

Daylesford Organic

Antipasti Hamper

A breath of summer via Daylesford Organic's hamper of light bites (olives, salted broad beans, waxed cheddar…) and light quaffs (rosé, sparkling apple juice).

    In conclusion…

I wouldn't dare to pretend I know what your specific mum would like for Christmas. My mum, for example, has a penchant for cheeseboards and ‘90s action films, whereas yours might prefer walnut dark chocolates and a night at the opera. I still think I have a general idea of what most mums would like, though, and like every other category, it covers off practicality and/or thoughtfulness. Personalised gifts work particularly well come Christmas — such as jewellery with their birth stone, custom chopping boards, or a heartfelt photo album — but I ultimately always recommend taking the time to think about your mum's specific tastes and hobbies before you choose.

Beyond choosing a beautiful gift from the guide, I recommend planning a special day featuring some of her favourite activities and people. Family brunch at that new wine bar, perhaps? A day at the spa? Maybe even a visit to a place she loves, such as Kew Gardens? You could even book her onto a personalised experience like a cooking class, craft lesson or wine tasting. One of these things — alongside a lovely present — should adequately show your appreciation for her and create lasting memories, too.
