I have dutifully compiled a very big list of lovely things in this guide to the best gifts for mums, but up top I'd like to discuss what dutiful children, commenters on Reddit forums, such as R/Gifts, and mothers themselves know to be true. Namely: the most important thing you can do for your mum this Christmas (or on her next birthday) is be there and be nice.
Sure, gifts for new mums, old mums, mother-in-laws and mother figures are coming out of our ears, but your choice should always be accompanied by an experience: a visit home, breakfast in bed, a home-cooked feast, a promise for a weekend away, or even a homemade gift such as the best hamper you can muster, including all her favourite things. The best gifts for dads might elude even the most inventive of us at times, but choosing something for your mum is comparatively easy… and easily fortified by your best behaviour.
Having said that, my edit of gifts to buy your mum this Christmas covers everything from gift sets and beauty products to homeware bits, chocolates and experiences. In order to cater to every mum, I've touched on seasonal standouts such as Desmond & Dempsey's sleepwear gift sets, plus The White Company's cosy presents, as well as year-round picks, like the uniquely excellent experience that is ABBA Voyage or a lovely new fragrance from Molton Brown. In essence, I've tried to make it easier than ever to find the perfect present for your mum — within your budget.

Team British GQ choose the best gifts for mums
Editorial Assistant Olivia Vaile swears by a scented candle. “Nothing radiates tranquillity and says ‘sit down and relax’ quite like a burning candle. Jo Malone’s Pear and Freesia scent is my go-to.”
Audience Development Manager Hannah Enderby concurs: “The gift of a candle doesn’t get better than one from Diptyque.”
Research Associate Zinya Salifti relies on Liberty London for her mum-related gifting: “Colourful, soft, and elegant, this robe is perfect for lounging around with a cup of tea at home. It’s practical, but choosing a thoughtful pattern makes it all the more personal. Plus, she’ll think of you every time she wears it!”
Lifestyle Director Mike Christensen goes a more zany but undeniably smart route: a fancy dog poo bag holder. “These days, the bowel movements of my mother’s dog (a Tibetan Terrier called Kenzo, btw) get a lot of airtime. So here’s to making at least one part of the whole carrying-poo-bags-with-you chic.”

How I chose the best gifts for mums
Choosing a gift for your mum is a subjective endeavour, which is why I've tried to present a wide variety of options from very different categories: while I do like to dabble in the cliché, I also present things like jigsaws, DIY biscuit icing boxes and tickets to ABBA Voyage in order to cater to the diverse types of mum to be found outside traditionally narrow gifting categories. As British GQ's in-house gifting expert, I (Jessie Atkinson) work across 25+ gift guides, attending launches, trying out products of all kinds that would make great presents and personally selecting from my own favourite things (currently, I can't get enough of my Eberjey pyjamas, and my mum loves the Maison Balzac glassware I bought her last year). Elsewhere, I've selected products and experiences that have excellent customer feedback and/or are provided by brands that we’ve tried and loved before.

Best Overall Gifts for Mums
If you want to be rid of the pressures of Christmas gifting in 1, 2, 3, these are your most prominent lifelines. Somewhat of a one stop shop, The White Company has cashmere-streaked socks, cosy robes and faux fur warmers, as well as diffusers and candles in abundance. For the latter, Neom is also a dab hand at candle-making, while Mejuri and Monica Vinader hold the answer to your affordable-but-still-quality jewellery prayers. Some other easy solutions: knitwear, glassware, sleepwear, and cheese and wine (duh).
Best Christmas Gifts for Mums
Even if you're buying something that's not explicitly festive, Christmas gifts still have a magical edge by virtue of being under a tree and enclosed in gingerbread print wrapping paper. As such, fragrance, cashmere socks and a special gadget she's wanted for ages (like a Kindle) feel almost as in the spirit as a pair of Christmas PJs or a fragrant wreath.
Best Affordable Gifts for Mums
You can still score maximum brownie points from minimal budget, as this edit of things costing £35 and under proves quite neatly. Some of the loveliest bathroom concoctions are a little pricey to buy for oneself on a regular basis, but are eminently affordable when bought for another. A sentimental mug (if you haven't already bought her one recently) is a terrific way to remind her of you every time she has a tea. Come to think of it, tea (the fancy kind) isn't such a bad idea, either.
Best Homeware Gifts for Mums
A vase (filled with flowers, please) is perhaps the most often deployed of homeware gifts, but there's an almost unlimited selection of other things that you could consider. A coffee table book, silk pillowcase or novelty jug are some of my favourites, but you could go completely off-piste with a pair of leopard book ends or a chopping board personalised with her own mum's hand-written recipe.
Best Fashion & Beauty Gifts for Mums
Your girlfriend may be picky when it comes to the makeup you buy her, but there'll be no flies on your mum, either. If you're going to do this properly then you're best either replacing a treasured skincare product she's running out of, or choosing something from a brand she already wears a lot. Your other option is to take a punt at something you have a feeling about: if it's from a brand like Molton Brown, Laneige or Marc Jacobs, you're unlikely to go too far wrong.
Best Gift Ideas for the Mum Who Has Everything
I've met the kind of mothers who have seven bags by the same brand in their dust covers and a co-ord in every colour, so I completely understand how some Christmases can feel a lot like contributing to a problem. Still, there are ways around it. Experience gifts intended for the two of you top my list, but how about a book (a new release or a clothbound special edition from Folio Society) or a DIY project? Shopping isn't all frivolous (just don't tell her that).
Best Luxury Gifts for Mums
If your budget is as flush as a winter complexion, I've got some wonderful suggestions, starting with my favourite perfume launch of the year: Creed's opulent Queen of Silk. Then there's some things that everyone (but especially your mum) would love: a sweatshirt from Anine Bing, some colourful AirPod Max headphones from Apple, or a magnum of sparkling wine. Hampers from reputable brands are also always a wise place to spend your money.
In conclusion…
I wouldn't dare to pretend I know what your specific mum would like for Christmas. My mum, for example, has a penchant for cheeseboards and ‘90s action films, whereas yours might prefer walnut dark chocolates and a night at the opera. I still think I have a general idea of what most mums would like, though, and like every other category, it covers off practicality and/or thoughtfulness. Personalised gifts work particularly well come Christmas — such as jewellery with their birth stone, custom chopping boards, or a heartfelt photo album — but I ultimately always recommend taking the time to think about your mum's specific tastes and hobbies before you choose.
Beyond choosing a beautiful gift from the guide, I recommend planning a special day featuring some of her favourite activities and people. Family brunch at that new wine bar, perhaps? A day at the spa? Maybe even a visit to a place she loves, such as Kew Gardens? You could even book her onto a personalised experience like a cooking class, craft lesson or wine tasting. One of these things — alongside a lovely present — should adequately show your appreciation for her and create lasting memories, too.
