The best gifts for dads and the worst gifts for dads depend entirely on, well, your dad. For example, while a fan of golf and beer, my father Alan doesn't care for mowing the lawn or the Premier League. Those cliché dad gifts that pop up every Father's Day, then, are only half right when it comes to him, and doubtless they're completely wrong for a good portion of the male, child-having population. In my mind, few categories within the best gifts for him niche need a harder look.
In this guide I've set out to do just that: dive into the world of gifts and pick out the ones that I think dads of all kinds might actually like for Christmas this year. Just like with my 25+ other British GQ gift guides (the best gifts for mum and the best gifts for women among them), I've taken the time to include both unusual and more cliché things, from ouija chopping boards and artisan tinned fish to M&S cashmere jumpers and John Lewis towelling robes. I hope you find something perfect from this list, but if all else fails, just take him out for a meal.

Team British GQ choose the best gifts for dads
Contributing Writer Josiah Gogarty goes to bat for prestige with his dad-centric gifting. “Even if your dad isn’t a wine buff, a bottle of posh fizz suits a celebratory occasion and can even be dispatched the same day it’s unwrapped so you won’t get the evil eye from your mum for cluttering up her house.”
He also tips his hat to cliché: “A lovely tie will do him good – and no-one makes ties lovelier than Drake’s.”
Both Lifestyle Director Mike Christensen and Audience Development Manager Hannah Enderby prefer more experiential alternatives. Mike likes the idea of a Stretch Lab voucher for himself ("As a dad, this is exactly the kind of luxury I’d never buy for myself") while Hannah says you should go straight for a dinner reservation — at “London’s hottest modern restaurant", Donia, if you want a specific rec.
How I chose the best gifts for dads
As part of my ongoing goal to bring all of the best gifts the internet has to offer into neat guides for every relative imaginable, I, in-house gifting expert Jessie Atkinson, spend much of my time calculating which products and experiences are actually worth your hard-earned money. Many of the unisex products you can find in this guide have been loved by me — and plenty of others, such as Le Col's cycling gear, have been recommended by someone I know and trust (including my own cycling-mad triathlete dad, Alan). Where neither of these things were possible, I've chosen products from brands I've tried before, that other members of the GQ team recommend, or that have excellent customer reviews.

Best Overall Gifts for Dads
In the spirit of Christmas (that is: being generous, but not so generous that you bankrupt yourself), I've prioritised value for money in my choices of the very very best presents to buy for your dad this December. John Lewis and M&S will always deliver on quality for less than you might expect, while buying a grooming item (or hamper of them) that he'll actually use pays for itself. Food and drink never fails, either, particularly on the official national holiday for gluttony that is 25 December.
Best Christmas Gifts for Dads
If Christmas is special to you and gifting functions as a kind of competitive sport among the members of your family, then I'm here to help you win. My advice is to buy something absolutely lovely that he'd probably never think to get for himself: a watch, for example, or a superlative hamper. I'm borderline obsessed with this Donegal wool jumper by Toast (it also comes in red and green) and any fragrance that Creed melds together in its lab is always worth the money.
Best Affordable Gifts for Dads
Some of my more affordable favourites are also some of the most popular on this guide — and many others like it. A ouija chopping board is so much fun and under a tenner, a diary from my favourite stationer Papier is just £20 and an Arket sweatshirt is timeless, durable, highly-coveted and unnervingly well-priced.
Best Luxury Gift for Dads
If you want to say “thanks for being there” via letting your cash loose on something lavish, the options are abundant, each product more dashing than the last. From an annual subscription with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (plus welcome bottle), to a Montblanc pen or a London skyline chess board, these are my top choices. Perhaps it may even be time to pull the trigger on the pizza oven he keeps mentioning in passing…
Best Gifts for the Dad Who Has Everything
Having everything and wanting nothing are somewhat one and the same, meaning that most dads will likely fall under this category. The trick is to resist buying any old thing and, instead, do the thinking for him. What is something he'd treasure or use, even if he'd have never considered it for himself? A subscription, novel or useful tool work well in most scenarios.
Best Food Gifts for Dads
Food and drink gifts can be functional by way of a set of knives, a chopping board or, to get more specific, the astonishingly effective Diptyque kitchen-smell-neutralising candle. They can also be purely in service of gluttony, by way of chocolate, cheese or booze. Like gifts of any other kind, they can even be utterly frivolous: I'm looking at you, bottle opener that is also a top hat-wearing Fortnum & Mason lobster!
Best Gifts for the Sports Dad
Golf and boules may be widely accepted as Old Guy sports, but people of all ages partake, of course. The same can be said of cycling, football, darts and the increasingly-popular ice water immersion.

In conclusion…
According to a 2023 survey for Virgin Red by onepoll.com, you're not alone when you struggle with choosing a gift for your pops: 38 per cent of the 2,000 adults polled thought dad was the most difficult person to buy for. That's why most dads, according to the poll, will receive socks, craft beer and aftershave for Father's Day every June. As you can see from this list, I reckon these options can work well if they're carefully chosen and you think he'll actually appreciate them. If not, I recommend focusing on personalised items, a meal, or an experience together.
To get more specific, a driving experience can be a hot ticket, while I’ve found dinner for the two of you at Harrods' mouth-watering Pasta Evangelists also goes down a treat. Other unusual gifts for him (or at least, some things that are a little more left of field) that could work for the patriarch of the family include a cycling jersey from Sir. Bradley Wiggins backed cycling brand Le Col or Rapha, a kitsch bottle opener or a selection of artisan tinned fish.
