If your bedroom is due a refresh, a new mattress or bed frame from Emma is well worth your consideration. The season for sitting and spending time in your garden is over, but that doesn't mean you can't invest in garden furniture for next year. John Lewis needs no introduction as a furniture shop, but what you may not have realised is how good the department store’s sales are. With discounts of up to 70 per cent off items that rarely go on sale (we’re talking Herman Miller chairs, bed frames, tableware, and Le Creuset pans), think of it as a one-stop shop for all of your home upgrading needs.

If you’re after good, stable furniture made from quality materials that cost less but look pretty damn good, Habitat makes for a great starting point. With everything from larger furniture items like sofas, sofa beds, chair beds, and bed frames covered, all the way to down to simple storage options, lighting, soft furnishings, and even garden bits, it’s basically a one-stop shop for everything you might need to do up your home. Its Clearance section has some great bargains that are easy to navigate thanks to Habitat's handy categorisation, and you can currently use the code FURN20 to get 20% off furniture. French artisanal furniture? Say no more. Bringing ultra-chic French furniture styles to a global customer base, La Redoute has collated an impressive and wide selection of stylish furniture, from dining sets and coffee tables to rugs, lighting, and even office furniture. Now with up to 50 per cent off furniture, lighting and plenty of soft furnishings in its January sale, it's a sale well worth your attention.

Amara stocks a range of excellent and widely-loved brands including Ralph Lauren Home, Kartell, Wedgwood and Addison Ross, spanning everything from kitchenware to bathroom accessories and, yes, furniture. From stools to storage units, everything is well worth pouncing on while discounted, with many products sitting pretty at half price or even higher reductions. While Amazon’s Prime Day sales from July and October have come and gone, as have Black Friday and Cyber Monday, January is here and ready to delight. There are also plenty of deals to be found on the platform outside of these shopping holidays. From hot tubs and indoor furnishings to everything you need to get your home office in shape (we're talking office chairs and standing desks galore), plenty of deals are still live. And the advantage of shopping well in advance of Christmas is you don't need to worry about delivery chaos and stock issues that can crop up in the rush to buy gifts.

Dusk is one of our favourite bedding brands, managing to keep the quality high while also being on the more affordable end of the spectrum. Rather than spending nearly £100 on sheets, duvets and towels, you'll be looking at a much more reasonable price, though the fabric and material feels much more expensive. If you fancy taking your interior decorating to another level, Dusk also has a range of sofas, mattresses and bed frames that are well worth a browse. Most of them are currently on sale, too.

If you’ve ever dreamed of shopping at Pottery Barn after seeing it pop up in countless American TV shows, we’re happy to inform you that West Elm is the best way to get your fix over here in the UK. Owned by the same parent company, West Elm has a similar vibe and quality to Pottery Barn, with collections encompassing everything from living room furniture to bedroom pieces and even soft furnishings. And what better time to try it out for yourself than the West Elm sale, featuring deals on dining tables, sofas, bedding and even chairs and accessories.

Barker & Stonehouse is a classic British furniture store, but its designs are by no means just traditional, encompassing everything from the more contemporary and minimalist to bolder pieces. Currently, thanks to the January offers, you can get up to 25 per cent off all of the main collections, from the living room and dining room furniture to bedroom items. We’re big fans of the Vinci chair below in the Barker & Stonehouse sale, but it’s well worth plenty of time spent browsing through everything on offer.

If there's one thing you'll know Swoon for, it’s the brand’s sofas (although we do adore the sideboards, too). Easily its bread and butter, the collection of sofas at Swoon is one of the most comfortable we’ve come across, with configurations that extend from smaller love seats or two-seaters, all the way to five-seaters, corner sofas and sofa beds. Thanks to the brand’s focus on creating bespoke sofas, you can choose between 60 designs and more than 80 fabrics to really build your dream sofa. The good news for interiors enthusiasts is that there are excellent sales all throughout the calendar year. January, for example, is among the cheapest months in which to buy furniture because sales – which often began in December with the Boxing Day sales or during the best Cyber Monday deals 2024 – continue throughout the month. And, of course, Black Friday offers an almost overwhelming number of sales and discounts from which to choose.

The winter is generally an excellent time to buy furniture for this reason, as well as the fact that you’re likely to spend a lot of time indoors in the cold, dark months. If it’s icy and windy outside, all the better to have a proper sofa and/or bed in which to hide and watch films. Then, as things warm up, the summer sees sales too, in the months where people might traditionally be abroad or on holiday – retailers want to keep moving their products, so offer significant incentives.
