It was inevitable that one day Daniel Craig – exclusive wearer of Omega watches since he became Mr James Bond – would bag himself a MoonSwatch, the time piece that has been inspiring queues of crazy-eyed fans for over a year now. Like them, Craig would wait for his time to come, but when the offer presented itself, he would pay his £207 for the privilege.
If ever there were a blueprint for masculinity in the modern era, you’d struggle to find someone better than Daniel Craig to model yourself on. He made an honest man out of James Bond and then (spoiler alert) got blown up so he could focus on more favourable pastimes like dancing in a white vest, showing the world how to wear a neckerchief, and – most recently – presenting an award at the National Board of Review Awards Gala to his Glass Onion co-star Janelle Monáe.
After releasing the watch collaboration of the century last year, Omega and Swatch are at it again – releasing a shiny new MoonSwatch. Only this time it might be even harder to come by
It was on that outing we spotted the unmistakable bioceramic case of a MoonSwatch. Unlike Ed Sheeran (his Mission to the Moon is the most classic) and Zlatan Ibrahimović (his Mission to Mars is the most showy), Craig’s choice of colour and planet from the 11 is less inevitable than we may have predicted.
Read into the fact that Craig chose Neptune (the eighth planet from the sun) over Uranus, which is the seventh furthest – because he was 007 – what you will. Maybe he didn’t fancy the wordplay of ‘Mission to Uranus’. Perhaps this is him doubling down on the fact he’s so happy not to be Bond anymore. Or, could it be that Neptune was the only one he could get hold?
The Mission to Neptune is light blue with a dark blue dial and bezel while its white hands and indices as supposed to make us shiver at how cold it is apparently around those neck of the woods. Having an orbit period of 165 years around the sun will do that. And while not the obvious choice, nothing gets past Craig as Neptune continues to be by far the most in-demand MoonSwatch – with aforementioned crazies still happy to pay eight times the retail price.
Regardless of how he bagged it – and why he chose it – can we now officially confirm that you don’t have to pair a dress watch with a suit? Craig is always an absolute picture of style and rocking a MoonSwatch with his red carpet look is proof they have reached all areas access status.
