““You can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse” - Maybe not, but Doug Okun and Associates did succeed in turning what was once attic space in a Victorian house into a third floor modern suite. Indeed, by moving walls, and re-configuring space, he managed to create two bedrooms, a bathroom, a sizable closet and a gracefully curving staircase from the second floor. What had been dark, even claustrophobic, rooms became the bedroom level of a two story condo unit in a very desirable location in Somerville, Massachusetts. Doug worked closely with his contractor to see us through an at times arduous permitting process. In every respect he was indispensible.”

Jesse has worked many months on the project of my house in Eugene, OR., an old house whose foundation needed to be redone and the new basement was made into a liveable space after the house was raised. He has always been so helpful and knowledgeable, despite his very busy schedule. He was able to always prioritise my needs. “Don Bladja and his team at Koal PLLC have provided remarkably professional and creative work product for our home development efforts. It has been a joy to see our vision unfold with Don as he deftly works with our builder, his structural engineering partner, our cabinet maker, and others on our complex project. He has taken a very rough plan, started by another architectural firm with which we were unsatisfied, mixed in quite a number of unique and complicated requests from us along with forbidding site restrictions and has turned it into a detailed set of drawings that has "wowed" all with whom we have shared. Our builder and his tradesmen have easily implemented our shared vision straight from Don's plans. Many of our complicated requests, including a float room, sauna, elevator, and golf simulator/theater/business conference room combination (to name just a few) started as simple ideas scribbled on a napkin. “Nilsson Architects helped me to design major renovations to my two family home in Somerville. Richard Nilsson worked with me to create a "Universal design" for the base, two-level apartment with environments that are accessible to all people, regardless of age, disability or other factors. I am delighted with the accessible kitchen and bathrooms that we designed together, they are beautiful and perfectly useful. In the second apartment of my Somerville two-family house, Richard helped me to design a very attractive two-level urban-style home. Our design including a modern kitchen, dining and living spaces in a open, light-filled floor plan with home office and a study / guest bedroom spaces, three full bedrooms two bathrooms including a master suite with and en-suite spa and walk-in dressing room. Both of our apartment designs are delightful and I am very happy with the results of our collaboration with Nilsson Architects!
