Change of chief editor

1 April 2021

Dear authors and friends of JSSS,

JSSS, our Journal of Sensors and Sensor Systems, is now in its tenth year of existence. When JSSS was founded back in 2012, we were aware that establishing another journal in the field of sensors and measurement technology would be an adventure, especially an open-access journal that would also have the goal of becoming financially self-sustaining one day. Many of our goals have been achieved in the past years: a good scientific and technical level; inclusion in Scopus, Web of Science, and many other important databases; and the journal being economically self-supporting.

Many people have contributed to this: our authors, who provide the challenging scientific and technical content that makes JSSS worth reading; our reviewers, who ensure the high standard of the journal; our editorial board members, who provide fast and effective review; and, of course, the AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement, which ensured the survival and growth of JSSS through all the years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their cooperation and commitment to JSSS.

Ten years as chief editor at the helm of JSSS is a long time. The "baby" has outgrown its infancy and is now entering its teenage years. This should be the time to put the leadership of JSSS in new hands to lead JSSS into the next phase of development with renewed vigour and new ideas. On 1 April 2021, Ulrich Schmid, professor at the Institute for Sensor and Actuator Systems (ISAS) at the Vienna University of Technology, will take over as chief editor. Ulrich Schmid is not a new face at JSSS but has been with us as associate editor since the beginning. There will certainly be changes and additions to the scope and the editorial board in the coming weeks. We wish Ulrich Schmid all the best in his new role!

Gerald Gerlach, Founding Chief Editor (2012–2021)

Dear authors and friends of JSSS,

It is a great honour for me to assume the role as chief editor of JSSS!

I would like to begin by expressing my deep and special thanks to all involved in this exciting project for their dedication and commitment over many years. First and foremost, the founding editor of JSSS and long-time Chief Editor Professor Gerald Gerlach, TU Dresden, who has since 2012 with tireless enthusiasm sustainably established a scientific open-access journal in the research areas of sensors and measurement technology. This is even more remarkable as the two fields were already covered by high-quality journals. Thank you very much for everything you have done for JSSS, Gerald; the success has proven your vision right!

I am also deeply grateful to all the members of the editorial board and the reviewers, who have been willing to invest a lot of time over many years to ensure the high quality of the submitted contributions, being the basis for every scientific journal. I would also like to thank all colleagues at the AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement and Copernicus Publications for supporting this vision of an open-access journal in the field of sensors and measurement technology both administratively and financially. Finally, I would like to express my thanks to all authors and readers who use JSSS both as a suitable platform for the publication of their latest scientific results and as a timely and fast source of information. Without your support, JSSS would not have achieved this stage of success!

As the new chief editor, I would like to continuously adapt the main focus of JSSS to current developments in the field of sensors and measurement technology, including a careful expansion of the scope. I am thinking in particular of exciting topics such as the field of quantum sensors or new measurement methods for nanoscale material characterization, just to highlight two that show a lot of fundamental and application-oriented research potential for the future. For me, however, the basis of all future ideas and changes to JSSS is that the quality of the scientific contributions remains high.

I hope that you will regard the service provided by JSSS as beneficial for your individual goals and that you continue to support JSSS in the future with the same enthusiasm as in the past.

Ulrich Schmid, Chief Editor (2021–)
