One thing I love to do is Lifecycle cost. Taking short term low cost options and infusing a higher cost but higher value item, that within a year pays for itself. When approaching these topics we have to start doing projection design and start thinking at scale this cost $X for $X times a year as opposed to this other item that up front is more but because of its functionality breaks even by end of year one, keep it in good condition and now its making a profit instead of standard material goods loss. When we start showing businesses how going green can save them green in the end, or potentially make them more, its becomes a really easy concept to sell.

Break-even point is great to know, because sometimes the investment doesn't turn for more than a year. If you can show the long term investment and goal, with proper projections you can show the cost savings over the long term, and hopefully justify the investment. This is one area designers don't talk enough about is money, but I would say if you truly want to be effective as a sustainable designer, you have to get used to talking about money, it is the one motivator that people have a hard time arguing against.

Return on Investment (ROI) is a critical metric in any financial discussion, including sustainable design. You should be able to explain how you calculate ROI for sustainable features by comparing the net benefits (energy savings, increased property value, etc.) to the cost of implementation. ROI is hug, and not all the time is this a quantifiable $$$ amount. ROI code lead to Community awareness, helping drive a campaign. Return on Investment can be som any different variables, depending on your brand's mission and data source it could be more valuable then money. Again ROI is one of those finance questions that most designers have a hard time quantifying without just looking at the tangible deliverable. In order for designers to really be the outside force that moves the needle, we have to be more like Businessmen than we are Creatives. But keep both modalities because the creativity is the differentiator that makes us the special sauce. Get creative, with money and data!
