How can you improve your public speaking with eye contact?

When we think about public speaking, we often picture the spotlight on the speaker. But the best public speakers know it's really about the audience. Making eye contact with people around the room—be it a boardroom or a ballroom—is the fastest way to flip your focus where it belongs. It'll help you establish a two-way connection, read the room, and even ease anxiety by shining the spotlight on your audience and finding a few friendly faces there.

First let me say that all points made here certainly have their validity. But having said that, I would like to offer a different perspective. What is considered the cultural "norm" for engaging presentations, with Speakers making eye contact with their audience, this is not always possible for neurodivergent persons. I believe that while a Speakers "job" is to inform and engage an audience, perhaps we as a society can begin the work of expanding our expectations of cultural norms to allow for different abilities and methods of engagement while still benefiting from an enriching experience.

How do you feel when having a conversation with another person who won't look you in the eye? You might feel hurt, ignored, or disrespected. When speaking in front of a large audience, the same principle applies - eye contact can make or break the impact of your presentation. Eye contact is a powerful skill that not only acknowledges the presence of your audience, but makes them feel seen. It is a simple, but effective way to tell your audience that you are present, you are focused on them, and giving them your full attention. Eye contact is a way to develop trust and build rapport among a large crowd, and as a result can draw more attention towards you as the speaker.

Before I say a word I take a moment to look in the eyes of a few friendly faces in the audience. This trains my brain to continue using eye contact throughout my speech. During my speech, when I pause, I'll do the same thing. Find those looking back at you. It will build your confidence and create connection. 👀😃

There's nothing more frustrating than a speaker who focuses on one section (or their shoes!), leaving the rest of the room out in the cold. In the age of hybrid events, remember to address those tuning in via livestream as well!

Some "guru" proclaimed that if you lacked confidence to look just above people's heads during a speech. It would fool the audience into thinking that you're looking at them. It doesn't. I've seen several speakers do that. It shows their nervousness and doesn't create a connection with anyone in the audience. It also makes them look aloof and disinterested. If you're uncomfortable with eye contact, start with scanning people's eyes as that can be less intimidating than holding eye contact. When you're ok with that, then move onto holding 1-2 seconds eye contact with just a few friendly faces. The key is to take small steps.

Some recommend to look between the eyebrows of your audience. If you're not at ease with eye contact, that can be a good alternative but trained audiences will see the difference.

It is important to take into consideration cultural differences. Certain cultures find direct eye contact intimidating. It is also good practice to adapt your eye contact to the characteristics of your audience. When there is a wide power difference between the speaker and the audience certain members of the audience may find it uncomfortable to make constant eye contact and will avoid it. Thus, knowing your audience is the first step and then you can fine tune your eye contact to adapt to its characteristics.

It's important to remember that while eye contact can be a great tool for creating rapport with many, direct eye contact can be seen as disrespectful or even aggressive in some cultures. It's key to know your audience and be aware and mindful of their beliefs and practices around communication.

I think what really helps me is looking in the mirror and practising. I consider mirror as my audience. I practise that way. Or else I even talk to my family / friends. I simply think eye contact = conversation with friends

I’d like to advocate an inside out understanding of connection with audience as foundational prior to the notion of practice. While clearly our eyes are ‘windows’ in which others can connect with our inner or authentic selves (if we let them in), practice (either in front of a mirror or with those we trust) in itself may be counter-effective and may invite even more criticisms questioning one’s authenticity. On the other hand, if the focus is one of an interior disposition, a desire should foster an innate understanding of connection non-verbally, and this includes our eye contact. With this posture, practice will improve one’s authentic engagement.

Practicing eye contact is tricky for people who don't regularly speak in front of audiences. While I know it is popular advice, practicing in a mirror really does not mimic what you will experience. Here's 1 exercise that does: practice in the largest room in your home by shifting your focus to various objects in the room in the ways described previously. Then after, mentally go back through and tick off the objects you talked with. Try to make the pattern random and, if practicing a longer talk remember you will be going back to the same objects multiple time. Purposeful yet not overly long is the goal. If you are not too self conscious and have a child, place their stuffed animals around the room and make eye contact with them.

Even as an attorney, I use the skills I gained studying voice and opera performance when doing public speaking: in big crowds when I'm speaking at a distance, I look at people's foreheads or hairlines rather than directly into their eyes! It creates the effect that you're looking directly into each person's eyes without creating the anxiety that comes along with that.

That is why is so important to have eye contact because even though we are giving facts and very useful information people will not trust us if we look to another direction. I always recommend to start with baby steps for example you can start looking to your brothers and parents and then when you fill confident start with your closest friends. Once you feel confident you can move on to smalll groups and so on.

Many people feel themselves drawn back to that person to check in and see if they are doing better. Try to resist the urge. As the speaker scans his eyes throughout the auditorium, the public feels he is speaking to them directly, and that their presence is valued. Since every situation is relational, it is crucial for the speaker to connect with his audience through eye contact. Delivery of the speech is greatly enhanced by the speaker's focus on his audience. Yes, eye contact is a way to demonstrate confidence in the room, but it can also be something that potentially makes people uncomfortable or even self conscious if the speaker is drawing attention to them with their gaze. The most important ingredient is authenticity. If you stand up front trying to follow a non-verbal formula while you communicate, your own self consciousness could make others uncomfortable or dent your credibility. Try building up your public speaking skills in small steps. Start with one or two peoplen naturally making eye contact. As you start to increase your audience, your connectivity muscle will grow, making it flow naturally.
