Here's how you can effectively manage risk in photography projects.

I like to have a plan B or a quick alternative for any production. So, I bring extra batteries, extra memory cards, one or two extra lenses, and if I don't have two cameras, I can rely on the help of friends or even emergency rentals. The same goes for lighting and other equipment. Besides considering redundancy in the equipment itself, it's necessary to think about the security and backup of all the material produced, which is the most important. So, you can make a backup in the cloud on set, save it on another SSD or hard drive, and if possible, leave the files on the memory cards as well.

I like to check all my equipment before embarking on a photographic trip or a specific job. I check the batteries, memory cards, and the camera's functioning. I also verify the card readers and backup SSDs. Occasionally, I clean all the equipment, especially the lenses. After a job or trip that involves locations with sand, saltwater, chemicals, extreme cold, or extreme heat, it's always good to clean all the equipment and test to see if everything is working well. If possible, insure the main equipment, such as cameras and lenses, which are the most expensive items.

It's always best to discuss the possible risks involving a different location or one with greater risks, such as water and other elements that could damage equipment. Failures happen, and it's important to have a plan B. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with clients, explaining the situation, helps align expectations. This includes possible delays, changes in plans, alterations in delivery, and deadlines. When there's clear and assertive communication, the outcomes are much more readily accepted, whatever they may be.

It's not worth losing an entire project just to stick to an idea that could simply transform into another.
