What impact does student feedback have on educational reform?

Article 12 of the Rights of the Child emphasises the right of every child to have a voice and for their views to be considered seriously in all matters affecting them. As educators, we must recognise the significance of valuing and respecting children’s perspectives and insights and advocate for it. By actively seeking and incorporating their feedback into our practices, policies and curriculum, we empower children to shape their learning environments and experiences. This not only fosters a sense of agency and ownership but also ensures that educational initiatives are responsive to the diverse needs, interests and voices of the children.

In terms of developing the curriculum and enhancing teaching and learning, pupil voice cannot be emphasised enough. The student insight into how they learn best, and therefore how information can be delivered best for them, requires reflection on student feedback. On my current role, we have utilised pulse checks, questionnaires and also pupil forums to gather information as to best approaches to take to ensure out students make the most progress.

At the end of every school year, we create a One Page Profile with students on the SEN register through which we go through an interview with them to give us insights into their experience in school. They share what they believe is helpful to their learning, what does not benefit them, ways they'd like to receive support, and insights into their view of themselves. This has greatly guided our understanding of our students and helped us better support them.

Those in decision making positions will use this information to remove irrelevant parts of the curriculum and add more or fine tune the existing to make the curriculum more useful to the end user, the student.
