In the end, front-end development is a discipline of software engineering and all the basic concepts can be applied there. A lot of online courses will try to give you shortcuts and skip most of them. But trust me, fundamentals are essential in the long term run. For that you can take courses like Harvard's CS50 and also books. Technology is evolving fast, but the concepts and fundamentals are still the same as 30 years ago. Computers only got faster.

Experts, typically, seek official code repositories, books, and understanding authors to scrutinize everything with the finest detail.

Foundation - Before jumping right into learning web development, it's important to have a basic understanding of design and HTML/CSS fundamentals so you don't make any mistakes while coding. I would say, the most important point to keep in mind is, Learning by doing. I personally feel when you watch any tutorial it feels so easy and do able overall also you don't learn anything extra beyond the needs of your project/task. But when you build the projects, you don't know how to do 'A', so you search that 5 times on internet and along with that you find some more things which are related to it which makes your learning horizons wider. A bonus point: It really boosts up your confidence, when you do things on your own, rather than following a set of things in tutorial.

Nothing beats building something. I love trying to push the boundaries of a library or framework. I build small “throw away” projects in repositories that I can reference and revisit as needed.

One thing I wished I was told earlier regarding keeping track of my progress is to build my own website and work on it as if it was a really serious project. There are lots of tools that are popular to help get you there and it's always a great practice to try to build your own (without losing the main focus). Writing a blog is also very helpful in a way that it makes you realize what where you focusing on at the time of writing and compare that to your present focus.

This will keep learner accountable and also help in building online presence. Having personal jira board or task list is also important. Feeling of stricking out any task from list or moving jira ticket to done state is great and make you feel sense of achievement.

It's super important to maintain an exchange with your colleagues at work and the online community. This interaction can bring valuable insights into what needs more attention. Participating in code reviews, collaborating on open projects, and engaging in technical debates are great ways to receive constructive feedback and boost your professional growth. It's always good to remember that keeping an eye on your development as a dev is an ongoing process that evolves with you. Diving into this cycle of self-assessment and adaptation will not only keep your skills sharp but also open paths to explore new opportunities in the ever-changing universe of front-end development.

Underestimating the importance of progress tracking. It's a powerful way to see how far you've come and identify areas that might need more attention or practice.

Strong basics, while not strictly required, help a lot. There's a ton of web UI frameworks and libraries out there - Angular, Vue, React - there's no way to know them all. But learn how DOM works - and you begin to see underlying commonalities between all of them, which makes the learning curve much smoother. Play around with low-lever rendering and common data-binding - and things like WPF or Flutter will start to seem much less alien. This process can go on and on - learning lower levels is an investment that is paid back generously when you have to work with yet unknown higher levels.

I would like to add "disciplined", stay curious, motivated, and disciplined. Being motivated is very good, but we are not motivated 100% of the time, should we stop learning if we are not motivated? No, that's where being disciplined comes in. We need to have a mindset of having a good progress each day, even if it's just reading some 5 minute article, as long you're improving yourself. By the end of the day, you should be able to say to yourself, I'm better as a programmer/person today than yesterday.

It's a great way to connect with fellow developers, seek advice, and stay updated on the latest trends. Thinking that learning front-end development is a linear process. It's more like a continuous loop of learning, applying, making mistakes, and refining your skills. Embracing this iterative approach has been crucial for my progress.

Plan before you implement!! This is what I have learnt the hard way and making it a habit has made me just so much better at my job and decision making, in general! Say, you are making a To-Do App. You should first list down the following details in a doc. or some tool like ExcaliDraw: 1. What are you building? 2. What will be the key features and functionalities? 3. What features will be common in different parts of the application and what will be consumer-specific? 4. Check and list down edge cases, if any. This helps you create common components for better reusability. In the end, just analyse if it all sums up and works in your head. If it does, most of it will work. This significantly reduces the dev time and refactoring of code.

Team work - Try to share what you learnt or contribute to a project as a team, that way you get to learn the things that you didn’t and likewise.

Call me old fashioned but I keep a physical journal(s) where I write down helpful tips and best practices, solutions to previous coding challenges I've come across, concepts I find myself repeatedly searching for on Google, etc. It's also a cool way of tracking where I started and the progress I've made since then. For example, the very first page of my first journal explains things like what HTML boilerplate code is and what rem units are and the most recent page of my current journal is related to JSON Web Tokens and submitting payments online using the Stripe API.

If you are a beginner or Junior make sure that you master the basics. Understanding the fundamental web technologies, HTML, CSS, JS will help you jump into any Framework or Library easily and you will understand the reason all these tools and frameworks were born to really improve the developer experience and the development process. If you are a mid-senior feel comfortable experimenting with various tech stacks and start mastering a few ones. It's important to also start adapting your mindset that enterprise coding is more than just tech, is about collaboration and team effort. As a senior you have mastered many concepts, you should be focusing on very advanced and specific topics in order to combine this knowledge with your experience.
