1 Know your value

Instead, look for opportunities when the company is growing, launching new projects, or celebrating successes.

3 Make your case

Once you have chosen the right moment, you need to present your case in a confident and respectful way. Start by expressing your appreciation for your current role and the opportunities you have had so far. Then, explain why you are ready for a promotion and how it will benefit both you and the company. Use the evidence you have gathered to support your claim and show your value. Be specific about what kind of promotion you want, whether it is a new title, a higher salary, more responsibilities, or more autonomy. Be prepared to answer questions and address any concerns your boss may have.

4 Negotiate the terms

If your boss agrees to consider your promotion request, you need to negotiate the terms of your new role. This is where your negotiation skills come in handy. You want to aim for a win-win outcome, where both you and your boss are satisfied with the agreement. To do that, you need to know your BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement), which is the minimum you are willing to accept. You also need to know your boss's BATNA, which is the maximum they are willing to offer. Try to find common ground and avoid ultimatums or threats. Be flexible and open to suggestions, but also assertive and realistic about your expectations.
