  • There are three production traits available for genetic selection: Milk, Fat, and Protein. All three traits are expressed in the expected second lactation yield in pounds compared to the breed average. Since most milk markets are paid on Fat and Protein yields rather than the volume of milk, let’s take a closer look at Fat and Protein and how they stack up. Imagine if you were comparing two groups of Holstein sires to breed to your herd. Sire Group A has an average Fat of +120 and an average Protein of +60. Sire Group B has an average Fat of +120 and an average Protein of +50. Read the rest: https://lnkd.in/gAB5r73R

A bottleneck is defined as the cause of a delay in a process or system. Are there cow design overall trends that are causing bottlenecks in your dairy impacting efficiency and bottom line? Are you unsure where you can look to determine those? Do you know if you have a bottleneck, or would an outside pair of eyes help you identify inefficiencies? That’s the beauty of a partnership with ABS Global. We can help you by walking through your system to identify any bottlenecks that may be present and support you in assisting with genetic decisions that can improve those inefficiencies. You don’t have to do this all on your own. Here are a few things to consider when looking at inefficiencies in your systems that are related to your cow’s conformation. https://lnkd.in/gmDwdGTG

  • Using good genetics in a beef-on-dairy program is essential for dairy producers to improve beef quality, increase marketability, optimize feed conversion, enhance health and productivity, and ensure long-term sustainability. Differentiating the beef cross calves you create will be key to standing out in a market filled with competition. By making informed breeding decisions and selecting beef sires with superior genetics and proven performance, dairy producers can maximize the potential of their beef-on-dairy program and meet the demands of both consumers and the beef industry. • Every animal has a job on a dairy and getting pregnant efficiently is the key to a long and profitable career for the operation. Thus, managing reproduction is very important on a dairy. Each open preg check means more time until that animal starts another lactation, more labor to get her pregnant during the next service, and more investment in resources needed to get her pregnant. Overall, if the animal is pregnant that is one less thing you have to worry about. This is why a reproductive trait is often a key component of a well-balanced genetic index. The two most common reproductive traits to include in a custom index are Cow Conception Rate (CCR) and Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR). CCR and DPR are tools you have in your tool belt, and you get to choose which tool is the best indicator for your herd’s reproductive success. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g4imEvdW

  • There are two key advantages of using selection indexes. The first one is they are subjective and simplify your day-to-day breeding decisions, such as which bulls you use or which animals to breed sexed or beef. Secondly, they allow you to balance many important traits and summarize them in a simple value, instead of only focusing on a few traits that could result in unintended consequences in other trait categories. While industry indexes are a great tool, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝.  Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gJeymT2x
