About us

The Academy of Cognitive TherapyTM, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1998 by a group of leading clinicians, educators, and researchers in the field of cognitive therapy. As part of its mission, the Academy supports continuing education and research in cognitive therapy, provides a valuable resource in cognitive therapy for professionals and the public at large, and actively works towards the identification and certification of clinicians skilled in cognitive therapy. Certification is awarded to those individuals who, based upon an objective evaluation, have demonstrated an advanced level of expertise in cognitive therapy. The Academy includes physicians, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals from around the world. To date, there are over 600 Members of the Academy. The Academy of Cognitive Therapy is a multidisciplinary certifying organization specifically for cognitive-behavioral therapy that evaluates applicants' knowledge and ability before granting certification. The exacting standards of the Academy are designed to identify clinicians with the necessary training, experience, and knowledge to be effective cognitive therapists. Lack of rigor in certification represents a significant problem for both clinicians and consumers. Certification by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy indicates to the public, potential employers, and other clinicians that the individual is a skilled cognitive therapist. The Board, Officers and Founding Fellows of the Academy are highly experienced cognitive-behavioral therapists who have made major contributions to the development of this treatment approach. They have designed the certification process to identify therapists who are expert clinicians.

  • As President Elect of the A-CBT Board, and Psychologist, Scott Waltman shared during our recent live, this time of year can be challenging not only for clients but for clinicians too. The holiday season brings packed schedules, increased stress, and a host of personal and professional obligations. Here's a reminder to practice what we teach: even small moments prioritizing your mental health baseline make a big difference. Lean on your support network, be intentional about downtime, and remember—you’re doing meaningful, important work. Take care of yourself, too. #therapistreminders

  • The A-CBT Diversity Action Committee recently explored CBT clinicians’ comfort and confidence with multicultural training. Their findings showed that most clinicians felt neutral at best about their training, with mid- to advanced-career professionals reporting less confidence than those earlier in their careers. These results emphasize the importance of ongoing support, education, and training throughout a clinician’s career to enhance multicultural literacy and keep skills current. At A-CBT, we strive to support ongoing development by creating and offering a range of training opportunities to meet members’ needs. At the upcoming IACBT conference in August, our Board Member Dr. Janee Steele, PhD, will present on the multidimensional model of broaching behavior, offering practical strategies for integrating discussions of race, ethnicity, and culture into therapy sessions. #acbt #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #diversitymatters
