Trans students deserve to feel supported and respected at school – which is sometimes the only place they can be themselves. School districts in New Jersey have a responsibility to create a safe environment for all students. With Inauguration Day approaching, the threats on rights and liberties by the Trump administration grow by the day. But the ACLU is ready to confront any efforts to undermine our democracy. We will challenge any targeting of protestors or dissenting voices. We will fight voter suppression. President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportation will be catastrophic, not just for immigrants, but for all Americans. As our country faces a second Trump term, it's clear that the attacks on reproductive freedom across the nation will continue. That means New Jersey must be a leader in ensuring that the right to abortion care is not only legal, but accessible and affordable for all who need it. Even before Roe v. Wade was overturned, communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ communities, and people who are low-income have borne the brunt of restrictions on abortion access. While abortion is a fundamental legal right in New Jersey, many people cannot access the care they need due to financial barriers. S3452/A4601 will remove financial barriers that restrict access to reproductive health care, including abortion, ensure that all qualified health care professionals are authorized to provide or assist in abortion care, and prohibit insurers from taking adverse actions against health care professionals. Affordable abortion care that is truly accessible is essential to ensuring reproductive autonomy and freedom for all in our state. Everyone deserves dignity and respect – regardless of their immigration status. Today, we sent a letter to the members of the NJ congressional delegation that voted NO on the Laken Riley Act, the most anti-immigrant legislation seen in Congress in a decade. Along with two dozen partners from across the state, we send our sincere thanks to those who acted on behalf of immigrant communities by voting NO on this dangerously harmful bill.

President-elect Trump has made it clear he plans to target immigrant communities and tear families apart, starting on day one of his term. New Jersey has the ability to create protections for immigrant communities and MUST take action NOW to pass the Immigrant Trust Act (ITA). The ITA will ensure that local resources are used for local needs and programs — not used to funnel New Jerseyans into the dehumanizing system of immigration detention and deportation. President-elect Trump has clearly laid out his plans to use government resources to perpetuate the mass arrest, detention, and deportation of our community members, tearing apart families in the process. These policies are inhumane – and one way Trump will aim to make them happen is by supercharging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
