Alliance for Feminist Movements

Non-profit Organizations

Our multi-stakeholder membership convenes, collaborates, & advocates for resourcing & support for feminist movements

About us

The Alliance for Feminist Movements is a collaborative multi-stakeholder initiative between governments, private philanthropy, feminist funds, and civil society organizations dedicated to: 1. Increasing and improving resources dedicated to supporting diverse feminist movements 2. Mobilizing partnerships and political support for diverse feminist movements The strength of the Alliance for Feminist Movements comes from bringing together a range of stakeholders to tackle issues on funding and political support for feminist movements that are bigger than any single donor-grantee relationship or sector. We act as facilitators, communicators, and educators in the feminist resourcing ecosystem. With our members we convene, collaborate and advocate for more and better resourcing for feminist movements. We do this by: - Ensuring that resourcing feminist movements features prominently in and around key events through collaborative actions across the Alliance’s stakeholder groups. - Using the Alliance as a platform for collaborative learning and action. - Convening Alliance members in strategic and collaborative dialogues, with a focus on ensuring stability in the resourcing ecosystem among existing donors and a long-term goal to bring in new donors. - Engaging with the Alliance membership in advance of and following key events on messaging and collective actions. The Alliance is guided by a Steering Group directly chosen by its members. Current Steering Group members include the governments of Canada and Malawi, the Ford Foundation, and Foundation for a Just Society, Women’s Fund Asia, Mama Cash, XOESE, Resurj, APWLD, and Mujeres Transformando. AWID as the Alliance’s fiscal sponsor has a non-voting seat on the Steering Group. The Alliance is not a project of AWID. Become a member today and unlock the power of collective action as we reshape how our movements are funded and supported.

New research out from Outright International on the impact of the funding freeze on LGBTQIA+ groups ends with key recommendations, including: 1️⃣ Make strategic investments in the global LGBTQIA+ movement by prioritising funding that supports core advocacy, visibility, fundraising, and grassroots initiatives. 2️⃣ Invest in data collection and research by funding ongoing studies to document the impact of the U.S. funding freeze, strengthening advocacy and funding strategies. 3️⃣ Coordinate a unified response among private funders by acknowledging the collective responsibility of private funders in addressing the growing crisis and developing shared funding, advocacy, and visibility strategies. 4️⃣ Strengthen LGBTQIA+ movement building and advocacy by funding efforts to protect and advance LGBTQIA+ rights. Use an intersectional, long-term grant-making approach that balances flexible funding for movement-building with rapid-response grants for urgent needs. 5️⃣ Increase support for developing economic independence by expanding investment in flexible funding models that strengthen movement resilience, promote autonomous resourcing, and enhance the economic independence of LGBTQIA+ organisations. 6️⃣ Co-create a long-term financing strategy for the LGBTQIA+ movement by partnering with key LGBTQIA+ groups to develop a five- to 10-year plan for sustainable infrastructure and resilience. https://lnkd.in/daKaFz_c

  • The impacts of the freeze on US foreign assistance funds are being felt by many of our members in a variety of ways. We know that many of you are trying to understand what you can do to respond. Here are a few key recommendations, and resources, which may be useful for you: ⁣ ⁣ 📣 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 about how our institutions are being impacted / will be impacted by these new policies, especially in conversations between donors and grantee partners. ⁣ ⁣ 💰 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬, including moving money quickly, to help organizations cover immediate and unexpected losses. For grantee partners, discuss these options with donor partners. ⁣ ⁣ 📈 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦, 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 that will support groups to navigate this ever-shifting landscape. As more budget cuts from other donors are likely to begin soon, this will not be a one-time shock. ⁣ ⁣ 🛂 Support the investment in 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬, including legal assistance, and build this support into grant agreements and donor-grantee partner conversations. ⁣ ⁣ 💡 Support our ecosystem to 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬. New types of philanthropists, new ways of giving, new ways of autonomous resourcing, and new ways of organizing are all emerging right now. Creating them will require ecosystem wide conversations and imagining. ⁣ ⁣ 🤝🏽 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 transnationally and across thematic areas and support that type of organizing in our grantmaking. The attacks on gender justice, women’s rights, and LGBT communities are not confined to one location or one type of issue, and our communities will build resilience and safety when we support one another. ⁣ ▪️ For regular updates on changes to USG development policy, read Devex - https://lnkd.in/dtRP4vaM ▪️ For information on how to navigate the foreign assistance pause, take a look at Humentum resources - https://lnkd.in/dv4k6yde ▪️ Want to track or add resources on the impact of the Stop Order? • The #AWIDForum2024 has come and gone, but questions about how we immediately resource our movements while dreaming of more abundant futures still reverberate. We left Bangkok with a clear mandate to co-conspire with our allies across the funding ecosystem with urgency, tenacity and collaboration as the magic tools in our collective box. We leave you these final thoughts, analyses and reflections as we close off the year, as well this quote from our “Talking Money” session at the AWID Forum: 💡 “This is the moment we were built for. We are back in a moment where gender equality funding is on the chopping block. We need to be ready and seize on the advocacy of the past and political windows when they open. We need to build public support. The impact of these decisions will impact women and girls and we need people to understand that. Remember that ODA (Official Development Assistance) is our money, tax-payers money, how do we make people understand how to use it.” - Katharine Im-Jenkins, Equality Fund 1.
