Protecting rainforest and climate and advancing the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin.
About us
Amazon Watch is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. We partner with indigenous and environmental organizations in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability and the preservation of the Amazon's ecological systems. We envision a world that honors and values cultural and biological diversity and the critical contribution of tropical rainforests to our planet's life support system. We believe that indigenous self-determination is paramount, and see that indigenous knowledge, cultures and traditional practices contribute greatly to sustainable and equitable stewardship of the Earth. We strive for a world in which governments, corporations and civil society respect the collective rights of indigenous peoples to free, prior and informed consent over any activity affecting their territories and resources. We commit, in the spirit of partnership and mutual respect, to support our indigenous allies in their efforts to protect life, land, and culture in accordance with their aspirations and needs.

🌍 At COP16 in Cali, Colombia, Amazon Watch proudly stood with Indigenous and frontline leaders to demand urgent solutions for biodiversity and climate. The Amazon, home to one-third of Earth’s biodiversity, is under siege by fossil fuel extraction, illicit economies, and rampant deforestation. Fires raging through the Amazon highlight the urgent need to protect this precious ecosystem—its loss fuels dangerous climate feedback loops. Leaders like Herlín Odicio and Jani Silva risk their lives defending their communities and the Amazon’s biodiversity. Herlín, representing Peru’s ORAU, calls for global action against criminal economies. Jani, a Colombian leader, reminds us of women’s crucial role in these efforts. Together, they sent a powerful message: enforce Indigenous land rights, halt fossil fuel expansion, and protect vital ecosystems. Amazon Watch is proud to support their work. Let’s stand with them. A small donation helps secure a future where the Amazon thrives. #COP16 #IndigenousRights #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

A Historic First for Indigenous Advocacy ✨🌎 As Miguel Guimaraes wrapped his speech at the U.N. Conference on Transnational Organized Crime, the room was silent—then burst into applause. In just three minutes, Guimaraes, Vice President of AIDESEP, revealed a hard truth: criminal networks are tearing through Amazonian lands, threatening Indigenous lives and ecosystems. Joined by Herlín Odicio of the Kakataibo people, they delivered three powerful messages to world leaders: protect Indigenous lands, recognize self-governance, and invest in community-led safety measures. 🔗 Read our blog to learn how Amazon Watch, in collaboration with Indigenous partners, is working to confront Amazon crime on the front lines. https://lnkd.in/gnjS442x

Brazilian street artist Mundano has transformed ash from rainforest fires into paint to create a powerful mural featuring Indigenous leader Alessandra Korap Munduruku. The mural calls on Cargill, the agribusiness giant, to eliminate deforestation from its supply chain. It highlights the devastating consequences of deforestation and the urgent need for corporate responsibility. Together, we must tell Cargill, #KeepYourPromise and protect our planet. #ClimateAction #IndigenousRights #Sustainability #ArtForChange #Deforestation
