Building power with Indigenous peoples to protect the Amazon rainforest, their way of life, and our climate.

About us

Amazon Frontlines was born from the water project ClearWater: a collaboration between four indigenous nationalities and an international support team to provide indigenous families with access to clean water in a region impacted by industrial contamination and to empower indigenous community members in the process. As the water project grew and health improved in the communities, the four nationalities saw the potential for collaboration to address a multitude of threats facing their rainforest territories, cultures, and way of life. The indigenous organization Ceibo Alliance was formed to address these issues. Amazon Frontlines is the organization committed to working alongside the Ceibo Alliance to support the nationalities' vision for cultural survival and rainforest conservation in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

  • The girls and boys of the A’i Cofán community of Sinangoe chose to express themselves to a judge through their drawings—to show their frustration and their hope. For six years they’ve demanded their right to a dignified education. In 2023 the community filed a lawsuit and the local court guaranteed their right to community-led education. It ruled that the Ministry of Education should present a plan to construct a space where the children of Sinangoe could learn. Instead of moving forward with the plan, the Ministry, led by Alegria Crespo, appealed the decision. They also launched racist and discriminatory attacks against the community’s ancestral practices. Today the girls and boys of Sinangoe continue to fight. Right now they’re protesting outside the Provincial Court of Sucumbíos, demanding their right to education.

  • We have an important update for you: the Ecuadorian Constitutional Court took the decision concerning Indigenous rights off their docket this week! There is still much to do—but this is good news! It gives us a little more time to make sure the Ecuadorian Constitutional Court holds a hearing in Indigenous territory and opens an intercultural dialogue. So, we wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who shared the message, engaged and took action this week. It made a difference. THANK YOU. As the case develops we’ll keep you updated; the battle isn’t over yet!

  • Have you ever bathed with alligators nearby? Michelle Gachet, from Amazon Frontlines’ communications team and Milena Piaguaje, an Indigenous youth activist and storyteller from the Siekopai Nation, both have. It happened during a trip for their recently published multimedia project, A Territory Called Pë’Këya. This is just a quick glimpse behind the scenes of that project. • Six years ago, in the Ecuadorian #Amazon, the Indigenous community of #Sinangoe lost their school to erosion. They made do, waiting for the government to replace their learning space. Then they kept waiting. The Ecuadorian government and Ministry of Education did nothing, but Alexandra Narváez, an A’i Cofán defender from Sinangoe, fought with her community for its children’s educational rights. Eventually the children of Sinangoe themselves sued the Ministry, demanding they build them a new school in line with the community’s needs, and they won their case! So, the Ministry finally acted: They appealed the students’ case. Narváez and her community aren’t backing down. They’re demanding that their provincial court ratify the decision to build a new school.  In her Op-ed, Narváez, winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize, explains how fighting for a school is tied to the work of shedding a colonial system, and how it is one of the keys to building a promising future for the A’i Cofán and the Amazon Rainforest.  Use your voice to demand that Ministerio de Educación del Ecuador act now by tagging them in the comments below. And read Narváez’s powerful op-ed here.

  • How does community-led education help protect the #Amazon and our climate? In a fascinating interview, Justino Piaguaje, a Siekopai leader, tells us about the framework that the Siekopai Nation is creating so that future generations can learn, inherit and apply ancestral knowledge to care for the Amazon forests. Through this process they’ll also be protecting the world, which depends on this ecosystem to maintain the climate balance. When he was younger, Justino received a western-influenced education that invalidated his own culture. He saw how young people of his nationality no longer wanted to speak their language or wear their traditional tunics because they were ridiculed and treated without respect. It made him want to strengthen the Siekopai culture in its youngest members so they learn to take care of their territory and guarantee their cultural and physical survival. So for three years now, the Siekopai Nation, with the support of Alianza Ceibo and Amazon Frontlines, has been developing a community-led education initiative. This education combines ancestral and western knowledge, encouraging the defense and protection of the Amazon.

  • "We’ve said it many times: The #AmazonRainforest is not for sale. And now, we need Ecuador's Constitutional Court to listen to us and take a stand for justice! Our sacred homelands are threatened by a new oil auction that Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa plans to launch, putting 6.5 million acres in the Amazon Rainforest up for sale". This is what Nemonte Nenquimo talks about in her new opinion column published in El Pais today: https://lnkd.in/dXKGnp2b "The Ecuador's Constitutional Court must convene a hearing in #Waorani territory immediately. The judges need to listen to our elders, our youth, our leaders and other Indigenous nations about why and how they must guarantee our right to decide over the future of our territories" Nemonte says. Help us to show the Corte Constitucional del Ecuador judges that the world is watching! This isn’t just for #IndigenousPeoples. It’s for the Amazon Rainforest, for the #climate and for the future of humanity. #FPIC #WaoraniResistance
