🌍 Last by not least, we are wrapping up our city spotlights today with Hamburg, Germany — also the coordinating city of the AMIGOS project! 🇩🇪 🏙️ Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg’s bustling streets reflect its population of nearly 1.9 million and its status as a European transport crossroads, supported by extensive bus, metro, train, and ferry networks. Yet, the city faces challenges in promoting safe, inclusive, and active mobility, particularly in residential areas where pedestrians, cyclists, and even young children often share the same space. 🔎 In Eimsbüttel, Hamburg’s key safety improvement areas, AMIGOS is piloting a “superblock-inspired” solution to enhance co-habitation among cyclists, pedestrians, and playing children around a local school. 🌍As part of the AMIGOS project, we're excited to share insights into our partner cities and its mobility characteristics. 🚴♂️🚶♀️ 🔎 Today, we turn our attention to Ankara, Turkey! 🇹🇷 🏙️ Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, is characterized by its bustling streets. However, the city faces significant challenges, particularly in its transportation systems. High traffic volumes in key areas lead to congestion, posing safety risks for both pedestrians and cyclists. This is especially concerning in busy districts that cater to tourists and local residents alike. The lack of effective infrastructure for active mobility and the need for improved accessibility create barriers for vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly. Additionally, the city’s historic districts require careful planning to ensure that any enhancements respect the cultural heritage while providing safer routes for all users. But there is a strong commitment to transforming its transportation landscape to promote safety, accessibility, and sustainable travel options for everyone. 🌟 Explore the detailed city factsheet and our latest deliverable on stakeholder engagement, now available on our website: https://lnkd.in/e5c5pPKw 🌐 #SmartCities #ActiveMobility #Ankara #AMIGOSProject #HorizonEurope

🌍 The AMIGOS project is dedicated to testing inclusive, safe, and sustainable mobility solutions across 10 diverse cities (+5 twin cities), each with its own unique challenges and urban contexts. Each city’s demographics, travel behaviors, and infrastructure vary significantly, requiring tailored approaches to ensure the effectiveness and replicability of the solutions being implemented. 🚴♂️🚶♀️ 🔎 Throughout the month of October, we are shining a spotlight on our 10 pilot cities to highlight their specific active mobility profiles. We continue today the capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik! 🇮🇸 🏙️ The City of Reykjavik is currently transforming Hlemmur Square, a historic mobility hub that has long catered to heavy car traffic while lacking appeal for pedestrians and cyclists. The ongoing redevelopment aims to create a pedestrian-friendly environment by prohibiting private vehicle access and reallocating space for cyclists and pedestrians and public transport users while enhancing connectivity to the city center. By prioritizing safety, security, and inclusion, the project seeks to improve air quality and accessibility for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Stay tuned as we explore more cities and their unique characteristics and mobility solutions throughout October!
