FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, December 20, 2024 APPLETON FIREFIGHTERS COMPLETE INTENSIVE “RIT UNDER FIRE” TRAINING {APPLETON, WIS., Friday, December 20, 2024} – Six members of the Appleton Fire Department have successfully completed the RIT Under Fire training course at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) in Champaign, Illinois. This rigorous 40-hour program equips firefighters with advanced skills necessary to operate effectively as members of a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), focusing on rescuing downed firefighters in life-threatening situations. The course combines classroom lectures, firefighter fatality case studies, and hands-on scenario-based training under live-fire conditions. Participants engage in activities such as drags and carries, breaching, heavy lifting with hydraulic and pneumatic tools, and managing firefighter mayday situations. The training is designed to challenge firefighters both mentally and physically, preparing them for the most demanding rescue scenarios. Appleton Fire Department’s participants included Battalion Chief Joe Kozikowski, Captain Jason Lee, Driver/Engineer Troy Kinley, and Firefighters Cody Peabody, Devin Halbach, and Ty Davis. They trained alongside peers from across the country, including departments from Las Vegas, Orange County, El Paso, Milwaukee, and West Allis. Training Highlights In one challenging scenario, participants were tasked with locating two downed firefighters who failed to respond during an accountability check. Operating in zero-visibility, high-heat conditions, they conducted a comprehensive search, rescued a firefighter through a cement wall while under heavy fire conditions, and provided a rescue breathing apparatus. Upon exiting the structure, they initiated Firefighter CPR (FF CPR), a specialized technique involving chest compressions while simultaneously removing the downed firefighter’s gear without interrupting resuscitation efforts. Commitment to Excellence This training underscores our commitment to the safety of our firefighters and the community. The advanced skills and knowledge gained from this course enhance our department’s readiness to respond to the most challenging emergencies. The Appleton Fire Department is proud of the dedication and resilience demonstrated by its members during this demanding training, reinforcing the department’s focus on professionalism, preparedness, and excellence in service. ### MEDIA CONTACT: Alex Quintana Public Information Officer Appleton Fire Department (920) 832-5816 Alex.Quintana@appletonwi.gov https://lnkd.in/gBggazbk
