As trusted, science-backed institutions that welcome millions of visitors each year, aquariums and zoos are uniquely positioned to engage the public in conservation. Using an equity lens, ACP leverages the collective resources of member institutions across the United States. Collectively, our 29 members in 21 states welcome over 35 million visitors a year. ACP members advocate for policy change, advance federal and state conservation policies, mobilize audiences to take action, and demonstrate our commitment to conservation in our business practices.

Working with the Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP) inspires us every single day. The ACP's dedication to conservation and sustainability showcases the incredible power of collective impact. Our work with ACP is accelerating climate action on an industry-wide scale. In collaboration with ACP and SSA Group, we’ve developed industry-wide resources that help aquariums and zoos assess their emissions and implement sustainable purchasing practices. The ACP Sustainable Purchasing Guide (linked below) as well as ACP’s aquarium and zoo-specific GHG Inventory Calculator are available to ACP and AZA members nationwide. In 2022, ACP’s member aquariums committed to a Joint Aquarium Climate Commitment with a long-term goal of achieving climate neutrality. We are catalyzing systems change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase climate resilience by helping ACP’s 32 members align to their Climate Commitment. Our approach is to meet each aquarium where they are and co-create a path to net zero emissions — ensuring their efforts and outcomes account for their local needs, barriers, and other relevant contexts. So far, 22 member aquariums have set Net Zero targets, with more in progress. Aquariums measuring and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions can tell their sustainability stories to the public and accelerate community-wide climate action. We're thrilled to catalyze systems change by helping ACP's member aquariums align with their 2022 Climate Commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase climate resilience. Yesterday, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, the official designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary was announced! Aquariums and zoos are celebrating the next exciting step in the official designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary! The Biden-Harris Administration recently reached a milestone in the journey to safeguard this remarkable part of the California coast. Once designated, the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary will be our nation’s 17th national marine sanctuary and the first to include Indigenous communities from the start. National marine sanctuaries help support healthy marine environments, build climate resilience and economic health for coastal communities, and - like our own aquarium - inspire communities to connect to the ocean. We look forward to final designation soon. ACP Statement: https://lnkd.in/eWrmQ3WZ
