About us

ASC is a non-profit Local Arts Agency dedicated to holistically nurturing and sustaining Charlotte-Mecklenburg's cultural ecosystem. We serve as the designated “Office of Cultural Resources” for the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and six suburban towns. By investing in arts and culture, we drive economic growth, foster community retention, support local creatives, and enhance the quality of life for all residents. ASC’s three-pronged approach is dismantling barriers and creating diverse, self-sustaining communities that invest in the upward mobility of its people and organizations. We operate as a FUNDER and fundraiser, providing a variety of grants, public art, supporting community-led initiatives through our Culture Blocks program, and financial resources to our community. We are also a RESOURCE and, an ADVOCATE, providing cultural education programs, workshops, trainings, cultural planning, and local advocacy for the arts and sciences. -------------------------------- 1. Community Engagement: ASC fosters diverse, self-sustaining communities crucial to Charlotte's cultural and economic growth. 2. Support for Creatives: ASC supports local artists with resources, opportunities, and platforms to advance their careers. 3. • The Arts & Science Council, a lead advocate for Mecklenburg residents, engaged local candidates on top arts and culture issues leading up to Election Day 2024. Candidates who ran for the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, North Carolina House of Representatives, and North Carolina Senate were given a five-question survey to share their views on the cultural community's concerns. Our goal was to get their candid feedback and provide education on the role of arts and culture in Charlotte-Meck. You can read the candidates' responses here: https://lnkd.in/eEUQSCba.

  • Hurricane Helene has caused catastrophic damage across western North Carolina, claiming lives and leaving millions devastated as homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure are destroyed. Roads, bridges, and communication systems have been severely impacted, making recovery even more challenging. At the Arts & Science Council (ASC), we stand in solidarity with our neighbors in WNC and our fellow artists and cultural organizations affected by this tragedy. In partnership with government agencies and nonprofits, Arts North Carolina is working to assess the full scope of the damage and provide relief and recovery support in the weeks and months to come. We urge our community to contribute to the NC Arts Disaster Relief Fund, organized by the North Carolina Arts Foundation. Your donations will directly support the artists and arts organizations impacted by Hurricane Helene. • We're excited that ASC has officially joined forces with the Foundation for the Carolinas (FFTC) to strengthen our commitment to creating a sustainable and inclusive cultural ecosystem for Charlotte-Mecklenburg! As part of this partnership, ASC will continue to steward funding from the City and County to support arts, culture, and science organizations in our community. ASC will also continue to serve as an advocate, resource hub, and funder for local organizations, individual artists, cultural education, and festivals. While this funding is a crucial step forward, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. To truly nurture our creative ecosystem, community support through donations remains essential. Your contributions and continued support allow us to expand our reach, foster innovation, and ensure equitable access to culture for all. Together, we can continue building a vibrant, thriving community!

It’s official! Arts & Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (ASC) and FFTC have finalized our partnership, with ASC joining us as a supporting org. The move will provide $21 million annually from the City and County to fund local arts, culture and science organizations. Also important: ASC will continue its work supporting organizations, cultural education, individual artists and cultural festivals.

  • It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved colleague and friend, Shameeka Henderson. Shameeka served at the Arts & Science Council for over 25 years and rose through the organization as the Director of Database Management. She was the heartbeat of the ASC. Shameeka’s passion for her work, her dedication to our mission, and her unwavering commitment to the community were truly unmatched.   Shameeka was a passionate advocate for ASC, sharing community events, grant opportunities, and artist calls with her network. Her work ensured we had the data and technology to tell our story and connect with donors and community members, allowing us to continue our mission and serve the residents of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. She believed in ASC’s role as community builders and cultural advocates and was especially excited about continuing to build trust and sustainability through transparency and collaboration.   Her selflessness, dedication, warmth, and problem-solving spirit will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the work we continue to do. Her contributions have left a lasting impact, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing Shameeka. Please join us in honoring her legacy as we remember with heavy hearts the joy and warmth she brought to our organization, to her family and friends, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg cultural community. ----------- For those who wish to read more and celebrate her life, her obituary can be found here: https://lnkd.in/emhruuuz
