  • "Atria West 86 has made me really excited to be here with their uniqueness in everything they do," shares Jeanne, a resident. "I've been here three years but, you know, I had to think about it. I actually didn't realize it. Time here flew by so fast because of the marvelous activities and excursions that I enjoy very much." In particular, Jeanne liked the Broadway Week her community held this summer. And we think she knows a thing or two about Broadway. "I was a publisher, editor and theater critic." Their week included a museum visit, panel discussion, watching videos of Broadway productions from throughout history, decorations, props and fun opportunities to dress up. "It was an extraordinary effort to represent Broadway," she adds. "And all leading up to the Tonys, which I love to watch!" "I enjoyed the Broadway Museum the most. The only tragedy was that I felt it was too short, even though we were there for two hours," she laughs. "In Broadway terms, it should 'still be running'."

  • "Patricia was sitting alone in the slowly filling bleachers with her face buried in 'The Two Towers.' My roommate had been reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I had picked up enough about it to strike up a conversation," recalls Dennis. "After we enjoyed the concert together, we agreed to meet the following Saturday. I read all three books in a week – I was motivated!" Patricia and Dennis, residents of Atria West 86, have shared many more moments together over the years, including finding careers in academia. "I got interested in astrophysics as a child," shares Dennis, former Chair of the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences at Valdosta State University. "An astrophysicist uses physics to figure out what makes the universe tick," he expounds. "I published several articles, most notably on the generation of space-time." Patricia spent many years as a specialist in Victorian literature, a field that varied greatly from her husband's. "I taught classes in a variety of subjects related to the nineteenth century, including how prose or poetry opened the doors to the history of the time and laid the groundwork for modern culture." We're proud to have these two highly accomplished individuals live their shared lives at West 86.

  • "It's part of my daily routine," shares Joan, who attends the morning exercise classes at Atria Seville. "I also participate in our afternoon Zumba class, our mobility & movement class, and the classes led by EmpowerMe Wellness. I like that EmpowerMe leads a half-hour exercise class, from tai chi to yoga, followed by a health lecture." "When I moved to Atria I was using a cane, and with these exercise routines, I no longer need it. Exercising every day makes me feel good!" Joan says. Joan, a piano player who taught and performed for years, loves that the classes pair exercise with music. She says that another thing that makes working out fun is having friends in class with you. "It's more fun to exercise with neighbors and it's always good to get others motivated too." We hope Shirley is your motivation to get moving today! 🧘💪🏃

  • We love seeing residents bring their passions and talents to their communities, especially when they're tasty.🍷 Terry shared his wine expertise with his fellow Atria Newport Beach residents during his "Wines of Sonoma" social. Residents learned how the wine was made, what type of grapes were used and how they get better with age.

  • It's a family affair at Atria Tarzana! Sisters Bobi and Donna and their cousin Lani all live at the community, making every day a family reunion. "My favorite thing about living here is the fact that my sister and cousin are always nearby. There are also lots of very nice people here to meet and socialize with, shares Donna. "I also love how I don't have to cook," she laughed. And while they enjoy their time together shopping and sightseeing, they also pursue their personal interests through their community's programming. "I love painting and all the art classes. They have a variety here to indulge my creativity," shares Lani. Bobi adds, "I'm into all the card games they offer! They are all so fun!" Whether they're at a community celebration or playing Rummikub in each other's apartments, you're going to find these three laughing together.

  • We've all heard the saying "home is where the heart is," and a home is at the heart of this story. 🏡 “Mr. Rolly and I got to know each other very well over the past year" shared Valeria, the concierge at Atria Newport Beach. "After helping him with a project of his, he offered to paint a building of my choosing." Mr. Rolly is known through his community as an outstanding artist and for his background in architecture. Valeria added, "He showed me his beautiful work and I instantly fell in love with his artistic style. I thought of a building structure that I really liked, and decided on the first place I called “home.” I chose my family home in Hollywood where my parents still live." While she may not live at home anymore, she will always have a piece of her home with her thanks to this outstanding artwork. "Having this beautiful painting in my apartment just puts a smile on my face. Thank you to Mr. Rolly!"

  • "I felt unique, original and proud because it is something that I made myself and something you can’t buy in the market. There is a piece of me in this scarf because I designed it myself," expressed Eileen, a resident of Atria Tarzana, of a silk scarf she painted herself. Residents enjoyed trying a new art form and expressing their creative sides. Eileen added, "It was a new experience; I was happily and pleasantly surprised by the results of how it turned out because I had never done anything like this before. The colors blended really well, and they came out prettier than I expected." We agree. The scarves are gorgeous!
