As we close out 2024, I’d like to thank our members, staff, volunteers, and everyone who engaged with the Australian Institute of Health & Safety this year. Together, we’ve celebrated key milestones, including the launch of SPARK—our innovative AI knowledge assistant—and expanded advocacy efforts on critical issues such as free access to WHS standards. This year saw a standout National Health & Safety Conference, which brought together hundreds of professionals to share insights and strengthen our collective impact. We also celebrated innovation at the Australian Workplace Health & Safety Awards, showcasing excellence and leadership. From successful symposiums across the country to greater media visibility for the profession, 2024 has been a testament to what we can achieve as a community. I had a great evening at the Australian Institute of Health & Safety ACT branch end of year catch up. I spoke to a small but engaged and experienced bunch of members on supervision standards for apprenticeship success, and it was a lot fun. I’m excited to share that the findings of my research have been featured in the December issue of the Australian Institute of Health & Safety's OHS Magazine. The article examines the psychosocial risks associated with implementing human-robot collaboration in the workplace - a topic of growing importance as technology continues to reshape how we work. In this piece, I explore how collaborative robots (cobots) are transforming organizational dynamics while introducing unique challenges related to mental well-being, trust and safety. The research emphasises the critical need to understand and address these psychosocial risks to ensure that human-robot collaboration not only enhances efficiency and innovation but also fosters a healthy and sustainable work environment for all employees. This work is particularly timely as organisations worldwide adopt more advanced AI-driven systems and robotics. By addressing these challenges proactively, we can create workplaces that harness the benefits of collaboration while prioritising the well-being of their most valuable asset: their people.
