Meet Debbie Liao, an investor relations partner in our San Francisco office who focuses on establishing and building lasting relationships with investors around the world. We chatted with Debbie for our latest #TeamTuesdays, here’s what we learned: 🖊️ You’ve lived and worked in several different cities including San Francisco, Hong Kong, Taipei and Boston - how do you think that enhances your role at Battery? 🔹 Battery has been around 40+ years and we focus on long-term relationships with our global investors. I feel my multinational background helps me to use empathy and cultural sensitivity in getting to know our LPs and building relationships. As a regular traveler, too, I am able to help our team stay abreast of industry trends and continue to learn ways to innovate on our work. 🖊️ What is the most common non-financial question you get about Battery from prospective new investors and how do you respond? 🔹 I often get questions about how we work as one stage-agnostic firm, instead of splitting into venture and buyout. Our core strengths involve sharing expertise across the stage spectrum, having diversity of thought due to people looking at deals from many different angles and being disciplined about risk/return. We act as a single team. 🖊️ You came to the firm with ten years of experience in the private-equity world—in your mind, what sets Battery apart from other firms? 🔹 High integrity, low ego, truly collaborative = our culture. It’s wonderful to come to work at Battery knowing we all want each other to succeed, have intellectually honest debates and also have plenty of fun together – ask me about slinging rubber chickens into stockpots with an analyst, a general partner and our CFO, and I’ll tell you about impromptu, high-functioning teamwork! 🖊️ What do you enjoy the most about working on Battery’s investor-relations team? 🔹 Karen Schiff Bommart, Erika Klein and I are a small and mighty bi-coastal team, constantly upleveling our function, while maintaining and cultivating great relationships around the globe. It’s been so rewarding to hear positive feedback across stakeholders and about the impact of our work on endowments, pensions and charitable missions. 🖊️ Before your career in investor relations, you worked in brand marketing and real estate. What are important skills you learned in those roles that help you today? 🔹 Left brain and right brain, analytical and creative, think short term and long term, pay attention to the details and also keep in mind the big picture. 🖊️ What’s something about you that might surprise our followers? 🔹 I speak Mandarin fluently, a little bit of Japanese and have lived ~40% of my life abroad. I’m glad to be back in San Francisco for the long-term. I enjoy scuba diving (warm water only) and had the best trip to Raja Ampat, Indonesia right before Covid.
