📸✨: This week, we will highlight the Black Women Photographers documenting this moment in American politics. Today, we’re highlighting the Black women who have and are currently serving at the White House. ✨ In 1993, Sharon Farmer (@sharon.farmer.1481) was hired as an official White House photographer and began traveling the world taking pictures of President Bill Clinton and the First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Then, in 1999, Farmer was promoted to Director of White House Photography and became the first African American and the first woman to hold this position. This information is from the @naacp’s profile piece on Sharon. ✨ Cameron Smith (@cameronsmithphoto) is a current official White House photographer for the Biden-Harris Administration. For nearly four years, she has documented history by following President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff around the world. ✨ Polly Irungu (@pollyirungu) is the current official photo editor for the Office of the Vice President to the Biden-Harris Administration. For the last two and a half years, she has served as Vice President Kamala Harris’s photo editor. She is also an additional photographer in the White House Photo Office, focusing on the Vice President and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. #blackwomenphotographers #hireblackwomenphotographers #BWPinHistory #whitehouse #whitehousephotographers

Today is National Black Girl Day Off (highlighting the significance of Black women's mental health) and the anniversary of WITNESS visual arts exhibition at TEDWomen - which opened one year ago on this day in Atlanta! Co-curated with Ms. Tina Knowles with support by Melinda Gates’ Pivotal Ventures, and in partnership with Polly Irungu of Black Women Photographers, WITNESS exhibition invites viewers to look alongside Black women to see what you might not otherwise see on your own. Princeton Professor Ruha Benjamin, librarian and researcher Jina DuVernay, Hollywood director Ava DuVernay and students from Spelman University, Morris Brown College and Clark Atlanta University were among the visitors during TEDWomen 2023. Nijeul X, Shay Wafer, Victoria Fortune, Michael Ryan, Polly Irungu, Chardae Adams, Nakeya S. and all of the participating artists: Revisiting the WITNESSxTEDWomen highlight video today reminded me of how immensely proud I am of what we accomplished together in support of the mental health, wellbeing and impact potential of Black women and girls. Since Atlanta, WITNESS has traveled to Miami Art Basel (2023) and New York City's Photoville (2024) and has been experienced by over 3000 Black women and girls. I am excited to bring WITNESS to more cities in 2025 to continue addressing narrative change.

I really like New York! I remember the first time I came here pre-pandemic (maybe 2018?), I enjoyed it then, but kept an open mind to other places. Now, I reflect on the past and see how much I needed to grow with God in various avenues, to really help me navigate to where I am now. Thank you to Vonecia Carswell, Black Women Photographers, and Charlotte Crabbe for the opportunity to photograph the organization Cultivate Vibrance, and their faith based, restful picnic event for black female leaders! Looking forward to other opportunities in New York. Sponsors: DECIEM | THE ABNORMAL BEAUTY COMPANY (The Ordinary) & CitiBike #eventphotography #newyork #beniciaking

My dream of photographing the Northern Lights in Iceland came true. Big thanks to Black Women Photographers and Nikon for believing in me enough to give me a grant to help fund my trip. Many of you know I’ve been talking about this dream for the last few years and how one day it would happen. Who would have thought that a month into my 30th year in this planet that it would come true. I feel truly blessed and will continue to take this spirit of anything being possible with me as I continue to march forward in my pursuit of being a commercial travel photographer. Also, shoutout to Jeff David King for coming along as my travel wingman on the adventure of a lifetime and capturing video. Video content coming soon! #iceland #travelphotography #photography #travel #contentcreator
