The #BlackCycle project was presented by Ineris - Institut national de l'environnement industriel et des risques and ALIAPUR at a Technical Day organised by the Axelera cluster.  This was another opportunity to present the project to interested parties.  It's also a way of ensuring that the project's successes continue to be shared.

Blackcycle, we have moved to the green tyre revolution! …What an accomplishment!   This week we held our final Blackcycle Project workshop in Saarbrücken and reviewed all the results of this project which aims to create a circular tire economy. We also had the pleasure of welcoming guests: F. La Marca, the project manager of the Blackcycle project (HaDEA), P. Runge from DG Grow of the EC, C. Perben from Eastman.   Before the project started in 2020, only a small amount of secondary raw materials (SRM) from the recycling of used tires could be reintroduced into new tires. At the same time, end-of-life tyres could provide a significant amount of material. The key question was finding the appropriate technologies to transform this material into high-quality SRM that we could use in new tires at a significant rate without negatively impacting tire performance. Many challenges awaited us: finding the right technologies for a very technical product like tires, bringing together the conditions to create a robust supply chain for new SRM and of course creating an economical and environmental viable value chain . Michelin, not able to achieve this alone, launched this EU Blackcycle project (co-financed by the EC) bringing together all the skills necessary to succeed through a consortium of 13 entities, each bringing its own area of expertise.   4 years later, the results are breathtaking. We have developed 5 mature technologies, including new dedicated processes (2 tire deconstruction machines, 2 pyrolysis technologies, distillation column) and new SRM: micronized innerliner rubber , improved recovered CB, sustainable CB as a replacement of CB ASTM, and a durable plasticizing resin.      During the workshop, we presented the excellent results around these processes and new SRM.  We also reviewed the other aspects of the project showing the positive LCA of the new value chain, the tools&data provided to prepare the deployment in terms of HSE management and social acceptance and some elements on economic viability of this new value chain.   We believe that industrial deployment of the value chain is possible. There is a common responsibility to succeed: industries, investors, society and the European Commission (EC)  The consortium identified potential obstacles that could be overcome through regulations and/or incentives to be put in place by the EC. These recommendations will be sent to European policy makers in a Policy Brief written by the consortium.   As coordinator of this major European project, I am extremely proud of the results of Blackcycle: in quantity and quality thanks to the very good collaborative work between all the partners and the very high level of kills and involvement .
