David Merritt, senior vice president of external affairs at BCBSA, released the following statement in recognition of #NationalRuralHealthDay.
Today we recognize #NationalRuralHealthDay, which brings to light the incredible efforts of rural health care providers, communities, organizations, State Offices of Rural Health, and other leaders dedicated to meeting the unique health care needs of rural America. Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies are proud to serve members in every ZIP code, including millions of Americans who live in rural parts of the country. We are committed to improving access to affordable, high-quality care for all Americans — no matter where you live. Because geography should never be a barrier to good health. BCBS companies have been developing innovative ways to serve members, including: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama expanded a medical scholarship program to further address health disparities in rural and underserved areas of the state by increasing the number of available providers. The program has graduated 29 medical professionals who now practice in rural Alabama, with that number expected to increase after the plan renewed its initial $11 million in scholarship funding and committed an additional $13 million to the program. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota pledged $600,000 to Minnesota State University’s Mankato Center for Rural Behavioral Health to support the center’s mission of improving mental health care access for Minnesotans in rural areas. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana and the Caring Foundation of Montana are partnering with Montana State University (MSU) to help tribal communities in rural and underserved areas meet federal HeadStart program requirements. MSU nursing students will leverage mobile care vans to provide the requisite health screenings and assessments. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico is helping to deliver essential eye care to children in rural New Mexico thanks to a donation to New Mexico Lions Operation KidSight, a nonprofit providing eye screenings to underserved rural children. Operation KidSight tests the vision of approximately 40,000 kids each year.

BCBSA employees receive volunteer time off to make a difference in our local communities. Last week, the external affairs team stacked hands to help organizations like Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana, Martha's Table and SOME (So Others Might Eat) ahead of the holiday season. #TeamBCBSA, how did you use your volunteer time off this year?

Costs for an ultrasound doubled. Costs for a chest x-ray tripled. And the cost for this procedure was four times higher! Read more in POLITICO about the impact corporate entities have when taking ownership of independent doctor's offices and what Congress can do about it. http://bcbsa.co/6042W9kGm

Thank you for having us! Hope For The Warriors® was also one of 16 non-profits that our employees volunteered with on our company-wide #CommunityImpactDay this September. #TeamBCBSA is proud to support our nation’s veterans today and throughout the year.
A big thank you to the amazing volunteers from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Federal Employee Program, BCBS FEP Dental, and BCBS FEP Vision who dedicated their time and effort to support recovering service members and their families. Your hard work putting together 150 bags of food filled with staple items and thank you cards will make a meaningful difference in their lives. We are truly grateful for your generosity, partnership, and commitment to serving our community.

It’s time to stop putting hospital systems’ profit over patients. When you get the same care from the same doctor at the same location – it shouldn’t cost nearly 4x more just because a hospital buys your physician’s practice. Our SVP of External Affairs David Merritt outlines two solutions that can help put a stop to the unreasonable mark ups from hospitals and protect patients’ pocketbooks. Do you think it's fair to pay as much as 4x more for care just because a hospital bought your doctor's office? We don't think so either. When you receive the same health care at the same location, it shouldn't cost more just because a hospital changed the sign on the front door. That's why BCBSA and BCBS companies are committed to working with policymakers to advance commonsense solutions that will protect patients and save the U.S. billions of dollars.
