On a recent episode of the System Catalysts podcast, Susan Magsamen tells the story of how she built her career in Neuroaesthetics: the study of how aesthetic experiences affect our brains and overall wellbeing. Susan is now the Executive Director of the International Arts + Mind Lab, Center for Applied Neuroaesthetics, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, a multidisciplinary research-to-practice initiative founded by the Pedersen Family, through the Pedersen Brain Science Institute. By developing and moving the Neuroaesthetics field from nascent to established, Susan is helping bring the Pedersen family's vision to life, and amplifying human potential using the arts and aesthetic experiences. Boldly Go is proud to be a partner of the System Catalysts podcast to share these and other stories of bold changemakers. #BoldlyGoChangemakers #PhilanthropyInAction
When discussing systems change, the conversation often centers on those traditionally seen as agents of societal impact, like philanthropists and non-profit leaders. But here’s the thing: systems change can be for everyone. Take Susan Magsamen, for example. From a young age, Susan discovered the profound impact art has on communication and self-expression. That spark led her to dedicate her career to the field of neuroaesthetics—essentially, the science of how art makes us feel. Building on her research, Susan has created a coalition that bridges the worlds of science, art, healthcare, and community action. Together, they’re integrating neuroaesthetics into practices that promote individual and collective health, supporting mental wellness in innovative and deeply human ways. If you’ve ever doubted whether your work can create meaningful, lasting change, let Susan’s story be your reminder: systems change starts with bold ideas and collaborative action. This episode is proof that we all have a role to play. 🎧: https://lnkd.in/eznhFxdg Special thanks to the team who made this episode happen: 🎙️ Hosts: Jeffrey Walker and English Sall 👋 Guest: Susan Magsamen, Executive Director of International Arts + Mind Lab, Center for Applied Neuroaesthetics, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Co-Director of Neuroarts Blueprint 🎥 Producer: Hueman Group Media 🤝 Partners: Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, New Profit, Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, Echoing Green, Maverick Collective by PSI, Virgin Unite, Synergos , Forward Global, NEXUS Global, Boldly Go Philanthropy, Skoll Foundation, and The Aspen Institute

Updated with Youtube link: https://lnkd.in/etYwsw-9 Sneak peak from a presentation I had been working on since August; what a grateful afternoon for time together to focus on benefit design, shared governance for doula coordination, transparency in claims data, supporting a diverse and retained doula workforce and the art and heart of doula care in the complexity of billing and claims.

Over the past eight months, Boldly Go has been collaborating closely with Lemnis, an emerging philanthropic venture created following the acquisition of the assessment provider NWEA by HMH. During our engagement, we supported Lemnis in identifying and refining its potential philanthropic focus areas. This involved conducting a comprehensive landscape scan of four emerging areas of interest: Belonging and Community, Social Sciences and Neuroscience of Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology, and New Ecosystems and Supports. Through this series of four posts, we will share key insights from our research across these four areas. We are excited to share a snapshot of our findings on the role of AI in learning and the opportunities for philanthropic impact. The time is now to ensure AI advances in education are equitable and inclusive. Philanthropy can be a catalyst for that change! #BoldNotes #PhilanthropyInsights #AIinEducation #EdTech

We are proud to share some exciting client feedback from our recent work with the IMA Foundation, part of IMA Financial Group, Inc. A leader in the financial and insurance industry, IMA engaged us to help them reimagine their foundation’s strategy. A focused and strongly aligned forward-looking strategy that sets the Foundation up for a lasting impact in their key markets. Ruth Rohs, President of the IMA Foundation, shared, "Boldly Go was an invaluable partner in helping us reimagine our corporate Foundation’s strategy. A growing number of multi-generation philanthropic families are seeking solutions to support individual family members’ personal philanthropy. Boldly Go Philanthropy and Elizabeth Ramirez, Founder of Winding River Advisors, spoke with multiple families about why and how they offer this type of personal philanthropy support and identified key themes: 1. Ease of use is paramount. If families aspire to spark more individual philanthropy, they should start with services and infrastructure that address tangible demands. 2. Families should expect that needs will adapt over time and build flexibility into how they structure services. 3. Personal philanthropy is a distinct component of the family philanthropic ecosystem. It enables collective philanthropy to stay focused on a family’s shared mission and values, and can create fresh opportunities for collaboration. 4. Squaring legacy family values with individual philanthropic interests can be a tricky and ongoing need. Families that prioritize alignment with family values may have some individual members opt out if their interests diverge from the family’s traditional approach. Special thanks to Tom Laurie from the Gates Family Foundation, and Laurie Dachs and Berit Ashla, representatives of the Bechtel family, for sharing their experiences for our case studies. We also thank the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) whose report, “Philanthropy in Complex, Multi-Generational Families,” served as a foundation for our research. Three cheers to partner Afton Bloom!
Our team is still buzzing from the State Exchange Convening on Birth Equity which took place earlier this week in Washington, DC. Over 80 funders from across 40+ states showed up to share their insights, learn from each other, and connect as colleagues and friends. The multi-day event was filled with lots of laughter, thoughtful discussion on critical issues, and most importantly - authentic and real conversations. We have so much we want to share, but for the sake of LinkedIn, here are a few of our team's major takeaways: 💡 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. There is real appetite and need for state level funders to connect with each other to talk openly about their work, what they're learning, what challenges they face, and how they can better support government and community to drive outcomes across their state. 💡𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝘀. We heard again and again the shared interest in cross-state learning, particularly for states in similar regions or those in similar environmental and political contexts. We also heard about the interest in building state and regional funder collaboratives to continue learning from each other. 💡𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁. We heard from Shruti Jayaraman from Chicago Beyond about the importance of funding individual leaders holistically (e.g., funding a salary, benefits, work space, and more) and from Felicia Brown-Williams and Wesley Prater about the critical role their funder partnership plays in ensuring they can support the ecosystem of small community based organizations in Mississippi. 💡𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹. This can help to reimagine, push boundaries and redefine what philanthropic dollars can do. We are hugely grateful to our Planning Committee - Cambia Health Foundation, California Health Care Foundation, Community Health Acceleration Partnership (CHAP), The Commonwealth Fund, FORE FOUNDATION, Irving Harris Foundation, Merck for Mothers, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Perigee Fund, Pritzker Family Foundations Children’s Initiative, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation - our partners at Boldly Go Philanthropy, and all the participants who were thoughtful and engaged throughout the event. Lastly, thank you to our guest speakers, Jennifer E. Moore, PhD, RN, FAAN, Michael Warren, First Lady of New Jersey, Tammy Murphy, Lisa Asare, Karrie Leonard, Tia Minor, Shelley Waters Boots and Betsy McNamara, CFRE who brought so much of our discussion to life.

We are thrilled to share the resounding success of the inaugural State of Birth Equity State Exchange Convening, which took place earlier this week from October 27-29 in Washington, DC. Boldly Go Philanthropy is proud to have supported Afton Bloom, Community Health Acceleration Partnership (CHAP), Cambia Health Foundation, California Health Care Foundation, Commonwealth Foundation, Fore Foundation, Irving Harris Foundation, Merck for Mothers, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Perigee Fund, Pritzker Family Foundations Children’s Initiative, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation in the organization and facilitation of this groundbreaking event. The convening brought together funders, policymakers, and experts from across the nation to address the critical issue of maternal health disparities in the United States. With a focus on advancing equitable birth outcomes at the state level, participants engaged in: - Strategic alignment sessions to maximize impact - Collaborative strategy building for birth justice funding - Exploration of community-centric funding approaches - Discussions on policy advocacy and supporting underrepresented voices in philanthropy We're inspired by the commitment and passion demonstrated by all attendees to tackle the alarming rise in maternal mortality rates and the widening racial disparities in birth outcomes. This event marks a significant step forward in catalyzing place-based philanthropy to improve maternal and infant health across the country. A heartfelt thank you to all participants, speakers, Boldly Goers Kyle Peterson, Sarah McMillian, Sumati Joshi, and Amira Tripp Folsom, and our partners at Afton Bloom and CHAP for making this convening a catalyst for change.
