About us

Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS is guided by the belief that architecture transforms communities and inspires people. Founded in 2000 in the heart of Washington, DC, we are a firm of 30 highly-qualified and creative architects and designers - problem-solvers who thrive on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of cities and neighborhoods. We are passionate about the power of architecture to uplift and revitalize the physical environment and the economic and social conditions of our world. We operate in a collegial studio environment: each team member participates in all aspects of project design, development and execution. An open discussion of architectural ideas and client solutions is valued and encouraged. Our staff works on diverse projects, ranging in size and complexity from residential renovations and adaptive use to large-scale, commercial and mixed-use developments. Our team lives and works in the neighborhoods in which our projects are built. Partners and team members give back to the community through teaching and involvement in local professional, civic and volunteer organizations. This ethos of community involvement is encouraged at every level. We believe that architecture should be expressive of its time, fulfill client and community aspirations, respond appropriately to its physical context, and inspire the public by being memorable and creative. We are inspired by challenging site constraints, thoughtful restoration, adaptive use of existing buildings, contemporary design and modern insertion in historic fabric. Our work catalyzes, revitalizes and sustains environments ranging from urban neighborhoods to rural landscapes. We create bold, modern, visually expressive buildings that complement their surroundings and raise the aspirations of the public and our profession.

Business Development Ambassador at INTUS Windows - Certified Passive House Trades-Person

"Friday Friday gotta get down on #FenestrationFriday!" This week I had the opportunity to meet with the great folks at Bonstra l Haresign ARCHITECTS and figured it would be apropos to showcase one of their great projects we had the chance to work together on The Kennedy on L, an 11 story multifamily development in the Capital Riverfront neighborhood, brings 74 luxury units to the heart of DC. This stunning project not only showcases cutting-edge architecture and thoughtful design but also prioritizes sustainability, energy efficiency, and comfort for residents. INTUS Windows has supplied our high-performance energy-efficient windows to ensure the building meets its green building goals while providing superior indoor comfort and reduced energy costs. Not to mention providing next level views of the city through large floor to celling windows. The Kennedy on L exemplifies what’s possible when design meets sustainability, and we’re honored to contribute to its vision. This project is a testament to how green building practices are shaping the future of urban living. A big thank you too the great team at McCullough Construction, L.L.C. and Caffes-Steele Windows & Doors for bringing this project to life and being a great partners over the years. Like what you see? We are only a message away from adding value to your next project! #INTUSWindows

  • We are pleased to announce that The Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness (TCP) opened their new headquarters offices at 14 Kennedy Street, NW in DC’s Petworth neighborhood! On November 7th, Associate Partner John Edwards, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, and designer Eliezer Perez attended the open house to celebrate the completion of the new building. It was a pleasure to hear from TCP Executive Director Sue Marshall about their move from Capitol Hill and their continuing efforts supporting and uplifting residents of our nation’s capital. Completed this past month, the modern glass office building has a total gross floor area of approximately 22,000 square feet on 5 floors, including a below grade conference center, unique penthouse executive level and approximately 700 SF dedicated to employee wellness. Such architectural features and effective programming include a variety of spaces such as a double height lobby, communal lounge, balconies, a rooftop terrace, a private gym, pantries at each level, and flexible training/collaborative spaces. Access to outdoor spaces combined with expansive glazing not only establishes a continuous visual connection to the surrounding urban neighborhood but also promotes a sense of welcoming transparency. The modern façade is composed of colorful and craft detailed masonry, and metal and glass metaphorically representing the foundations, structural framework, and dreams that TCP works to support for their employees, clients, and the community. We thank our talented staff and consulting engineers including CAS Engineering, Silman Associates, and Blue Moon Engineering!

  • We were honored to accept an AIA Virginia Award for Excellence in Extended Use: Historic Preservation for the Kanawha! Founding Partner Bill Bonstra, FAIA, attended the AIA Virginia Visions for Architecture Gala in Richmond, VA, joining Jury Chair Mark Cavagnero, FAIA, AIA Virginia President Kelly D. Callahan, AIA, and AIA Virginia EVP paul r battaglia, aia. From a field of 143 entries, only 19 were selected by the jury for recognition. The jury noted that they appreciated the careful preservation of the street façade and the beautifully detailed contemporary rear face which relates to the historic structure through its sense of scale, craft and care. The Kanawha is a completely restored contributing historic apartment building located within the Georgetown Historic District. Originally built in 1901, this colonial revival building was one of the earliest purpose-built apartment buildings in Georgetown, built for a rapidly growing population at the turn of the century. After receiving approval from the Old Georgetown Board of the Commission of Fine Arts, this long-neglected building received a major renovation and restoration creating modern luxury apartments. Congratulations to our client Hedden Residential Property Trust, general contractor Harbor Builders, Associate Milan Glisic, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP, ASID, as Project Architect, consultant partners including architectural historian EHT Traceries Inc, our consulting engineers, and our talented team at Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS for this incredible recognition!

There were treats and tricks this Halloween at B|HA… 👻 Our team showed up in some incredible costumes for our costume contest this year! Amongst all the creativity, Adeola was the winner of our costume contest as Glinda the Good Witch! Honorable mention for the scariest costume we saw this year: Sumayia as an Incomplete Timesheet 😖 Thanks to everybody that showed their Halloween spirit in costume! Later in the day, our monthly Staffy Hour turned spooky when there was a surprise murder mystery! With fall-themed snacks and drinks, our team tracked down clues around the office to crack the case. It was such a great time celebrating together with some spooky fun! We hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween! 🎃 🍬
