Defra have released the industry response to their new proposed requirement on plants for planting. Their requirement states: "We proposed to introduce a requirement for all imports of plants for planting (excluding bulbs, corms, rhizomes, seeds, tubers, and plants in tissue culture) moving into Great Britain to have been grown on a registered nursery and have been inspected prior to export. This was to provide greater biosecurity assurances for these plants, that otherwise carried greater biosecurity risks as a result of being grown in the wild or not being inspected prior to export." We had a great tour around Glinwell Public Limited Company today and, given the ongoing concerning threat of ToBRFV to tomato crops, we instead had a look around their excellent cucumber and pepper crops, conventional and organic. Their crops look fantastic but like many growers across the country, they are grappling with challenges with labour (maintaining workers via the SAWs scheme and incoming Sedex changes), crop protection needs, concerns about how the border control changes will affect the supply chain and their business, to name a few. We are continuing to actively represent growers interests in these matters but always open to hearing how else we should be supporting members. Thank you Matthew Simon and Joe Colletti!
