About us
Novato’s Buck Institute is the largest independent scientific institute in the Bay Area. The Buck aims to end the threat of age-related diseases for this and future generations by bringing together the most capable and passionate scientists from a broad range of disciplines to identify and impede the ways in which we age. Its goal is to increase human healthspan, or the healthy years of life. Globally recognized as the pioneer and leader in efforts to target aging, the number one risk factor for serious diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, macular degeneration, heart disease, and diabetes, the Buck wants to help people live better longer. Males and females have profoundly different #sleep patterns. New study Scientific Reports shows females sleep less, wake up more often and get less restorative sleep than males. Females are still underrepresented in preclinical sleep research. Too bad. https://lnkd.in/grUVCqGs

Our own John Newman participated in recent panel discussion at Gerontological Society of America (GSA) (#GSA2024) Exciting research shows that newer antidiabetic drugs (GLP1 receptor agonistics) may be gerotherapeutic, modulating multiple hallmarks of aging. Clinical trials are underway.

The mystery of the dietary yo-yo effect may be solved. Study Nature shows that fat cells possess an epigenetic memory of #obesity that can remain stable for decades. Work in mice and humans shows fat cells return to the obese state more easily, despite weight loss. https://lnkd.in/gKga33jV
