"Having a role in the federal government isn’t just about policy; it’s about amplifying the voices of those directly affected by your work." 📢 📜 📢 Recently, one of our build4good interns spoke with leaders in the U.S. Department of Education's Office of #EdTech about their careers in public service and how young professionals can work toward a more equitable integration of technology, digital media, and #AI into #K12 education. Read over Gerald Akwuole's interview with Kristina Ishmael and Ji Soo Song to learn how innovation can be "exciting," but why "we must address existing equity gaps to ensure all students can participate." 🗣️ https://lnkd.in/e2gZ7wrn Psst! Our #build4good program is currently looking for new summer interns! Know any early-career technologists interested in mission-driven work? Encourage them to apply for our next cohort. And don't delay: the application window close soon! ⚙️ https://lnkd.in/gPXt7hMj

For two days in our Washington DC offices, teams from the US and the UK—build4good student interns, educators, developers, designers, advocates, and data scientists—gathered to create edtech tools to use open educational resources (OER) more efficiently and better serve students with disabilities. Some insights: "... before this I wasn't aware of the extent of the possibilities and ways we can leverage AI; conversely, I didn't fully consider the possible consequences that AI can further increase disparities.” "Having educators, software developers, policy makers and young interns really made for a very collaborative environment where no two ideas where the same." Here is a recap:

Today we want to introduce you to our summer IT Intern Erica! We met Erica through build4good, a summer intern-mentorship program for college students and nonprofit organizations that aims to inspire a network of future leaders to develop civically minded technology and help nonprofits harness the power of technology for social good. Erica is helping us with various things this summer, from our website to data management to strategies to engage our Girlstart alumni. She attends Hunter College in New York and is studying computer science and statistics. We asked her a few questions about why she chose to major in STEM, what advice she would give to young girls interested in STEM, and more. Swipe through these photos to see her responses! Welcome to the team, Erica! 👋

It has been almost two years since the release of ChatGPT and since then we have seen remarkable advancement in AI technology. It is no secret that AI is extremely powerful and its rapid growth has raised concerns on its implications. Over the past week I had the opportunity to participate in an AI hackathon sponsored by New America to fulfill their promise in advancing education. I worked with a team of current and past educators, software developers dedicated to online accessibility, and my fellow build4good interns to develop a tool that could make teaching resources more accessible to educators with disabilities. Our team refined OpenAI’s API to build a voice accessed Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) system. We used Pyaudio packages and OpenAI’s text-to-speech (TTS) model to create a chatbot that can filter through textbooks and other documents in the Open Education Resource (OER) commons database. This free digital public library and collaborative platform offers valuable resources to educators nationwide, ensuring they have access to high-quality educational materials. Incorporating the voice-accessed RAG system makes the newly effective process of selecting OER materials even more inclusive for visually impaired educators. In just a few days, our team made the process of searching through the OER commons both efficient and accessible, advancing education and online accessibility. AI is coming, and the future of AI is up to us. Working on this project has opened my eyes to the incredible opportunities in which AI can (and will) be applied. I can’t thank the people at New America enough for funding an event like this. I could not be more grateful for the build4good directors along with my fellow interns for making this experience so special. I am excited to be part of the advancement of AI, and I am excited to see what the future holds for this technology.

Last week, I attended the build4good intern convening in Washington, D.C.! I want to say thank you to the organizers at build4good for putting together this fantastic event and bringing together so many other inspiring interns, speakers, and industry leaders. I especially enjoyed participating in the hackathon where my team and I used #AI to build a tool that generates accessible alt text for images and PDFs using #GPT4o. This tool will help adapt the content in the OER Commons database to be more screen reader-friendly. It was also amazing to meet the other interns working in nonprofits nationwide, learn about their work, and learn about the latest in-demand skills in the workshops.

  • Thank you Alaska Children's Trust for partnering with build4good, an initiative at New America to host build4good intern, Sonia Mar this summer!

This summer, ACT is lucky enough to have Sonia Mar working with us from the build4good program. Sonia is working to build a user-friendly data dashboard for our KIDS COUNT Annie E. Casey Foundation data. This dashboard will show data for how kids in specific areas of Alaska are doing, looking at metrics like family housing cost burden, 4th grade reading level, and child care access, to provide a holistic view of overall child well-being. The cool thing about build4good is that it matches nonprofits with students all over the country! Sonia is based in New York City, the original home of her supervisor, Kaila, so they were able to meet and data-crunch in person recently. More about build4good: build4good is a paid mentorship program that matches post-secondary students majoring in computer science, integrated digital media, UI/UX design, or other technology-related fields to mission-driven nonprofit organizations with technology-specific project needs.
